Sinossi

By bestselling ghostwriter and book doctor with a top London literary consultancy

'This book should be used as a text in writing courses'

'There are shedloads of books on how to write novels, and a lot of them are longer and considerably less useful'

'I wish I'd had this book a long time ago'

'The author has a proven track record as a writer of fiction, as opposed to writers of "how to write" books'

Are you writing a novel? Do you want to make sure you finish? Will you get lost and fizzle out? Will you spend more time reading about how to write than actually getting the words down?

Most books on novel-writing will make you read hundreds of pages about character arcs, inciting incidents, heroes’ journeys. It’s great to know that – but while you’re reading about it you’re not writing your book.

And what these books don’t tell you is how to use this learning and get the job done.

Nail Your Novel is a writing buddy – and mentor - in a book.

In 10 easy steps it will tell you:
*how to shape your big idea and make a novel out of it
*how to do your research and how to use it
*how to organise your time.
*how to plot and build characters
*when you’re going to hit problems and what to do about them
*how to write on the days you don’t feel inspired
*how to reread what you’ve written and polish it.

Along the way, Thumbnail Notes give tutorials about storytelling and storycraft – strictly when you need them. The author has written nearly a dozen novels that have made it into print – and this is how she did it.

You don’t even need to read the whole book before you get started. You read a section, then do as it says. And, once you’re finally satisfied, Nail Your Novel will tell you how to sell it to publishers and agents.

You’ve dreamed of writing a novel. Don’t procrastinate with another theory book. Don’t launch in, get stuck and throw your hard work in a drawer. Nail your novel.

5.0 su 5 stelle Perfect for me 28 settembre 2016

This book came along at the right time for me. I have a completed manuscript and am into the rewrite (with agent requests for chapters), but wanted a plan. I do have and have read a stack of very good books on revision and self-editing (Bell, Rubie and Provost, Browne and King, Cheney, etc). This one gave me a plan that fits me. That perhaps is the key - finding the method that suits the writer.
What resonated: a plan for determining overall story structure/developmental changes needed so they can be done in one pass vs going allllll the way through making one adjustment, then allll the way through making another kind of edit, and then, and then.
I originally purchased and read and began applying this in e-book format and have now purchased a hard copy which suits me better since I love to mark up the pages, dogear and all that. Going off to write now. Happy, just happy.

5.0 su 5 stelle Best Writer's Resource 8 dicembre 2013
Di Proud Kindle Owner - Pubblicato su Amazon.com

If I could give it more stars I would. Out of all the writing a novel books I've bought (which is a lot), this one has helped me the most. I am using it to plot and write my first novel, after having a snow storm of ideas. I used this book to help me and I am actually more relaxed and confident about writing my first draft. I plan to use it to resurrect my previous attempt at a first manuscript. It's alot of fun and uses creative ways to use your research in plotting. WIth this book I have gotten my story idea and plotting further than I have before and using Roz's games I have been able to cooperate with my inner perfectionist (we usually fight and she usually wins causing me to abandon novel ideas). I will truly keep this resource in my writer's library for a long time. Get this book! I am so glad I bought it!

3.0 su 5 stelle From Your Mind To The Page 12 agosto 2015
Di W. Clement - Pubblicato su Amazon.com

Roz Morris, an English writer has provided an optimistic book about helping you fix and finish your novel. I bought the book when it had a less eye-catching cover and a different price. The books starts out with promise; the first chapter is entitled "Why people start novels but don't finish". Good. You will find that 'writer's block' gets covered in a single page. Entire books have been written about this topic. While Roz does offer solutions to most writer problems, they are rather simplistic. If your 'inner critic' is sabotaging your writing progress, the best book I have come across is "Unstuck" by Jane Anne Staw. It is not a scholarly reference, but it has heart (unfortunately, it is now out-of-print). I have found a half dozen other books that are more useful than "Nail Your Novel" in getting you and your story back on track. It will be a process to find what actually works for you. The most important thing to remember is that there is a big difference between what your expectations are and how your story comes out on the page. I suggest "Writing With Emotion, Tension, & Conflict", by Cheryl St. John for help in crafting a compelling novel. Consider buying "The Mental Game of Writing: How to Overcome Obstacles, Stay Creative and Productive, and Free your Mind for Success" by James Scott Bell. You will find that the journey from your mind to your fingertips can be perilous. So it is.

4.0 su 5 stelle Not my favorite, but one good idea makes this worthwhile 30 marzo 2013
Di Aisling D. - Pubblicato su Amazon.com

I bought this along with several other fiction-related books, to enhance my story lines in "based on a true story" books.

For me, this book was worthwhile for the cards game, to break down the plot into individual elements, and rearrange them for the best impact.

The book's format... well, it's clearly based on the size and narrow margins of a novel. I wanted bigger pages and wider margins, for jotting notes in.

The organization of the book was clearly a challenge for the author. I looked at the table of contents and scratched my head, trying to figure it out. Basically, I think she's trying to make the book super-easy to navigate if you're looking for just one thing.

The editing took me by surprise. I hate to even mention that, because I'm guilty of the exact same problem... and that may be why the errors leaped off the page as I read it. (My own editing is vastly better than my writing is.)

But, looking past that, the information in this book is diverse. It will probably solve at least one big problem for every author in every novel.

I recommend it for anyone writing fiction, as a useful reference book. I'm not sure it's a book to read, cover-to-cover. It's a book to read until you find a great answer to why your novel has stalled, and how to fix it... and then get back to writing.

And, though I wasn't happy with the size of this book, I'll admit that it fits nicely on the shelf, and it's easy to pick out when I want to consult it for a quick (and reliable) fix for something that's not working in my current book.

3.0 su 5 stelle Well Written and Idea Packed...but Not for Some 28 gennaio 2012
Di Michael Edwards - Pubblicato su Amazon.com

I decided to read Ms. Morris' book to help revive a stack of old books and stories I never finished writing. The pile is rather large, and I hoped that the book would give me the tools I needed to finish and publish them. Sadly, it didn't work for me. I believe that the target audience for her book is writers who have one or two manuscripts in rough form that need a nudge to get them done. It's not for those whose writings are so fly-by-the-seat-of-one's-pants or deeply muddled that they need a serious spring cleaning -- not fine tuning. There's a group of would-be writers who may need to read more basic books on writing techniques in order to learn how to write synopses and plot scenes. Her book does not delve deeply into these writing techniques.

To her credit, the author gives readers a potpourri of good suggestions on how to break writer's block and improve a novel. She offers some excellent recommendations with easy-to-remember buzzwords like "outtakes," "block busters," and "beat sheets." For writers stuck in the middle of their novel who need inspiration, these are great tools to push it from draft to publication. The ending wraps up with a toolbox full of ideas on how to do this and ends with a chapter on preparing the manuscript to send to a publisher.

I recommend this book for experienced writers with a basic knowledge of writing who want additional writing tips. For those further along in their careers, it could be an indispensable resource. But this book isn't for every aspiring writer. For those literally dusting off that decades-old manuscript in a drawer needing extensive rework before it sees light of day, they may be better off starting with a basic "how-to" manual.
