"Each work is breathtakingly detailed, at once invoking a "simpler" time in the recent past (there are a few pop-art-ish flairs here and there that signal the decade in which the work was created). But it also tells the eternal story of NYC — that the city that never sleeps came by that name legitimately: the hustle and bustle apparent in pieces like "Wall Street and The Stock Exchange,""Mott Street – Chinatown" and "The Subway" will seem familiar to tourists and locals alike." ~MetroSouce.com

"It's an excellent book for fans of all things New York." ~Newsday

"This beautiful oversized reissue of the 1967 classic might just be the best value in the store right now. Full of immensely detailed line drawings reminiscent of Al Hirschfeld, you can spend an hour looking at each cityscape in the book and still find new details next time you open the book. A delight for kids and adults alike." ~Idlewild Books, New York

Born Werner Kruse, Robinson drew more than 250,000 illustrations during his lifetime. He also created books, in his "X-ray view" style, on Tokyo, Paris, and Moscow. Robinson died in 1994, at the age of 83. Matteo Pericoli is the author and illustrator of the bestselling Manhattan Unfurled.

5.0 su 5 stelle Impressive and astonishing work 21 marzo 2012
Di Parka - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Copertina rigida
This is an art book done in line art by German illustrator Robinson (1910-1994). On the book jacket, it says he has created hundreds of thousands of drawings, not just for New York. That sounds incredible but not hard to believe when you go through the pages.

It was first published in 1967 and this is a very welcome reprint. Looking at the illustrations is like traveling back in time to 60s New York, Manhattan precisely. The impressive skyscrapers were already up, and the 60s cars are all still crowding the streets.

The aerial drawings of Manhattan are breathtaking in astonishing detail. There are many in the book. New York Line By Line only has 64 pages, but the format is huge, great for showing off the line art.

I've been to Manhattan on holiday before and these drawings gives me fond memories of the place. Many are from the exact spot where I stood. There are drawings from the top of Empire State Building, at Park Avenue, Chinatown, Grand Central Station, NY Public Library, Bryant Park, Radio City Music Hall, St. Patrick's Cathedral,Rockefeller Center, Time Square, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Central Park, Kennedy Airport and more.

Through the drawings, you can see how New York has changed with its people and landscape. Buildings at Time Square were just a few floors tall back then. Today, their top can't even be captured in photographs.

I like the last section where they compare numbers from the 60s New York with present day. There were 3000 shoe stores back then and now only 620. It's interesting to see how businesses have evolved through those numbers, many which changed drastically.

This is an impressive and astonishing book.

5.0 su 5 stelle Spectacular 19 dicembre 2009
Di Avi Ewer - Pubblicato su Amazon.com

New York City is dazzling on a large scale and in its details. Much art representing the metropolis gets taken up with the compression of people, buildings, clutter and clambor. These drawings distill these elements to offer the brilliance in a very different, special and eye-opening way.

This presentation showcases the eye and hand of a wonderful observer in the city who reduces landmarks and general views to single color studies that present the essence of each urban scene in a large-scale collection of impressions showing scores of the component parts of Gotham.

Each individual drawing has its own character and variety to match that of the city. There are works jammed with molecular parts that demand close attention, others spaced to offer a sense of the open areas to be found within the mass of the place, reverse-printed scenes with an amazing feel of the buildings at night, and closeup representations of the storefronts or people that give the city its distinctive makeup.

The spectacle of NYC is made special, spectacular, by a simply beautiful edition here that highlights the talents of both artist and editor.

Revel in it.

5.0 su 5 stelle Love It 18 maggio 2010

I stumbled upon this book while specifically looking for hand-drawn line art of New York City similar to the cover of The Beastie Boys' "To the 5 Boroughs". I feel like I found one of those hidden gems that I should know about, but never did. This is kind of like a precursor to Where's Waldo; you'll find yourself analyzing every inch of each page, looking for interesting little details. Coming from someone with no art or architecture background, this book is a great, unique addition to the "large coffee table art book" collection.
5.0 su 5 stelle Great gift idea! 18 agosto 2013

I bought this for my husband, who is an architect, for his birthday. Since we recently relocated to New York, it was a really relevant gift.

Not only did he love it for its relevancy, he also thinks it's an awesome book. We have it on our coffee table, and guests have admired it greatly so far. It's really a beautiful book with lots to look at on the pages. I think even young children would like to flip through the pages and look at all the "busy" artwork.

Really a beautiful book, an excellent gift. We highly recommend it.
