The camera arrived quickly and as I already have a D90 and D800 I'd quickly got to grips with the basics for a video shoot the same day.
Unfortunately within a little while the auto focus on the camera just gave up completely through the lens and only worked in live view. Not a major problem but obviously not great so would have to go back. But as I had a paying shoot that day I put the camera to work, and fortunately/unfortunately after an hour of filming just as I was doing a few interviews the camera just came up with a 'ERR' on the display and no matter how I reset the camera power cycled it refused to do anything. So back to Amazon - who annoyingly would only put £3.99 towards postage and no swap out of the camera out as it wasn't supplied by them direct.
So, although the 3 extra features of the D610 are of no use to me, I have replaced it with the newer model as I can't afford this to happen on a shoot again.
Nikon to be fair were very, very good and the customer support was second to none. The online chat system gets you a real expert within a few minutes who really knows everything and didn't do all the stupid scripted telling you how to power cycle the camera or reset the camera - if you said you'd done this they trusted you and moved onto the next thing. Very impressed with the service so will be happy to keep buying Nikon!
One thing I was a little concerned with from this supplier was the box was a little damaged - nothing more than could have happened in packing, and I didn't realise this until getting the D610, but when I switched the fault camera on it didn't ask me for the time, date and timezone, so I'm wondering has this camera been back and forth a bit, or do the D600 have a tendency to fail?
If you can afford the extra £150 perhaps go for the D610, your gonna be keeping this camera 5-10 years easily.
Unfortunately it wasn't the first camera that only had the problem. The second D600 also has dust issues. After a couple of months, the problem arose again and this time Amazon refused to pay for another cleaning but offered a full refund upon my return of the camera, and suggested I buy another one. This was a timely procedure the last time I did it and so I decided to look into getting a home cleaning kit, which I would be getting no compensation for. I brought the camera to a camera shop and the attendant showed me how to do a wet clean. I took a photo after the 'at the counter clean' to see that the problem was resolved but there was still dust on the sensor. So I left it in for a professional clean. When I returned to pick it up, I was told that this camera has chronic dust problems and that she had 8 attempts at cleaning the sensor before it was totally clear of dust and it took her 40 minutes.
For a camera that takes such great images, it is such a huge let down that Nikon did not test this product thoroughly enough before putting it on the market. If it weren't for the dust issues I would probably be giving this camera 5 stars. Nikon have since brought out the D610 but with no promise or evidence of resolved dust issues. Another option is to jump to the D800 which is beyond the specs of what I want and beyond what my budget allows, being approximately €900 dearer than the D600.
The next logical step I see is to switch over to Canon, an established and trusted brand that meticulously test their products before releasing them. This is what I would advise a beginner starting out in photography to do and a step I feel I will eventually make.
So if you're prepared to deal with chronic dust problems, go for this one but I really feel that the D600 should at least be sold with a complimentary sensor cleaning kit.
This is the best camera I have owned and at the current price must be hard to beat, especially when coupled to a Nikon 50mm 1.8g or 85mm 1.8g. For versatility the 24-85vr is an excellent all rounder, which fits nicely into a surprisingly small DSLR camera bag (Crumpler cupcake 2500).
Recently used it on a weeding and the battery lasted two thousand photos.
It has many shortcuts for changing the main things, so you need time to get use (i come from Sony)
I am still impressed with the low light behavior.
Simply love it
