Sinossi

Normal Family is a wildly funny coming-of-age novel about a young boy's four consecutive holidays with his eccentric family. Over the course of Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter and Independence Day, our young hero, Henry Pendergast, comes to know his once-famous author (and now alcoholic) grandfather George, who sobers up long enough to help Henry come to terms with the mystery surrounding his mother's mental illness. Henry somehow perseveres through a landmine of dysfunctional relatives amidst a family in decline, including siblings, parents and step family, all set against the social chaos of late-1960s America. Funny, bittersweet and highly entertaining, Normal Family might be the first novel whose entire action takes place over the family holidays.

Ideal reading for anyone about to head home for the holidays, Normal Family will have you in fits of laughter. Bring it on the plane, the train, the bus...and by the time you arrive home you will feel ready for just about anything.

5.0 su 5 stelle A particularly well-rendered "Normal Family" 16 ottobre 2012

I loved Normal Family. It is tragi-comic at times which is not always easy to do. And whilst I was reading it those around me asked what book I was reading because of the range of emotions it incited in me.

Some of it rang so true. it left me wondering how much was (auto)biographical and/or observed. I liked the writing too and the author's voice definitely spoke to me - authenticity. So if none of it is authentic he is a damned good writer.... The book is still with me.

It manages to be really good fun, and deal with deeper, more serious issues almost simultaneously.

5.0 su 5 stelle Not a "normal" book 6 gennaio 2014

The premise of this story got my attention and saved me from the world of best selling authors who crank out pretty much the same story year after year. Mr. Trowden has an enjoyable style of writing that is perfectly descriptive without being too wordy. In fact, the scenes were set so well I found myself assuming that it was more auto-biography than fiction.

I had perfect timing in selecting this book as I read it at the height of the holiday season and, just like the main character, I found myself wondering if I was adopted. If you've ever shared that thought you will connect with this story and something about it will stay with you after you've completed it.

5.0 su 5 stelle Highly enjoyable 10 giugno 2012
Di Fred Watkins - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
This was a fantastic read, which both my wife and I enjoyed immensely. Trowden knows that "brevity is the soul of wit," moving things along quickly from one riotously funny holiday fiasco to the next. We highly recommend this to all of our friends.

5.0 su 5 stelle Family gatherings; how could we ever forget. 8 luglio 2012

Who of us has not cringed when recalling a family gathering gone bad. This tale, punctuated by a string of holiday get togethers colored with zany grandparents and manipulative older siblings, introduces a family being dismantled from the secrets that bind it. It unfolds from the eyes of a ten year old trying to hold on to his childhood while events swirling around him force a premature coming of age.

The narrative flows in a way that begs not to be put down and rewards with belly laughs and serious insight into the human conditions of depression and joy.

5.0 su 5 stelle Family Dysfunction, Humorous and Dramatic 23 giugno 2014
Di M.T. Daffenberg - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
A finely told story of a family in chaotic dysfunction from the perspective of one 10-year-old, Henry Pendergast. Through the eyes of Henry, we are given the view of his family told in four major increments of holiday events occurring in the tumultuous years of 1968 and 1969: Thanksgiving; Christmas; Easter; and the Fourth of July. This original method of revelation draws you into the family in a close, personal way by seeing them together and sometimes at their worst. As most know, holiday get-togethers with family are both a loving event of togetherness and a stress-inducing time to ensure all goes well. Trowden does well to capture those two essences, combining them into comedic episodes that will have you laughing at the same time you feel sorry, will have you relating to the desires of wanting a "normal" family while witnessing the catastrophic quirks of the individual members. It is a journey with an ending that will have you thoughtful about life and what family truly means. A great holiday read--funny and tragic, thoughtful and relatable.
