Descrizione prodotto

Normal Family is a wildly funny coming-of-age novel about a young boy's four consecutive holidays with his eccentric family. Over the course of Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter and Independence Day, our young hero, Henry Pendergast, comes to know his once-famous author (and now alcoholic) grandfather George, who sobers up long enough to help Henry come to terms with the mystery surrounding his mother's mental illness. Henry somehow perseveres through a landmine of dysfunctional relatives amidst a family in decline, including siblings, parents and step family, all set against the social chaos of late-1960s America. Funny, bittersweet and highly entertaining, Normal Family might be the first novel whose entire action takes place over the family holidays.

Ideal reading for anyone about to head home for the holidays, Normal Family will have you in fits of laughter. Bring it on the plane, the train, the bus...and by the time you arrive home you will feel ready for just about anything.

5.0 su 5 stelle Enjoy the ride! 11 giugno 2017

I loved that this novel had the 10 year old narrator, Henry, telling the story of his "Normal Family"....which actually was not like any "Normal" family I have ever known. The writing was so true and real, that I still worry about Henry, even months after reading it. Since this novel is the first of a trilogy, I very much am looking forward to continuing the saga of this family and worrying more about these characters.

5.0 su 5 stelle Tragic but humorous. A delightful novel. 29 dicembre 2016

What a good read! This novel occurs over a short span of time over four successive holidays as seen through the eyes of a ten-year old boy, Henry. The family members are revealed with all their flaws and shortcomings as they devolve into chaos, tearing apart the family that Henry desperately wants to be 'normal.' Trodden uses humor to lighten the tragic events as he describes grandpa falling into the lake and eventually dragging his wife into the frigid waters as well. If you liked Augusten Burroughs in Running with Scissors, you'll like Don Trowden in Normal Family.

5.0 su 5 stelle An easy read that's full of so much 7 maggio 2017

I read this in two sittings and it would have been one if not for need of sleep. The story is easy to read and follow. There's something everyone can relate to in here, even if the specific circumstances in the book may not be applicable. It's humorous but handles some serious issues without making 'jokes'. If you're looking for a solid, interesting read that injects some humor into an interesting story of family relationships, I can't recommend this enough (And the 2nd book in the trilogy is just as good, possibly better).

5.0 su 5 stelle Is there such a thing as a Normal Family? 11 settembre 2016

Is there such a thing as a Normal Family? The writing style exudes Don Trowden's wry sense of humor as he narrates the trials and tribulations of growing up in a disfunctional family through the eyes of young Henry. The bizarre happenings at holiday family gatherings are laugh-out-loud funny and starkly contrasted by the darkside of the distructive behavior of a family that is struggling to be normal. The character development is vivid and the story reads like a book with autobiographical roots that morphed into fictiion. A great read!

5.0 su 5 stelle Not a "normal" book 6 gennaio 2014

The premise of this story got my attention and saved me from the world of best selling authors who crank out pretty much the same story year after year. Mr. Trowden has an enjoyable style of writing that is perfectly descriptive without being too wordy. In fact, the scenes were set so well I found myself assuming that it was more auto-biography than fiction.

I had perfect timing in selecting this book as I read it at the height of the holiday season and, just like the main character, I found myself wondering if I was adopted. If you've ever shared that thought you will connect with this story and something about it will stay with you after you've completed it.
