I came to this album on the strength of reviews I had read in the music press. It was a long time since I'd listened to Marc since my interest fizzled out after his Mamba days. Unlike most, I wasn't impressed with 'Torment and Toreros' and although I loved the occasional track from his next albums (Jacky,The sensualist, The house is haunted, Mother fist etc) I found no full album appealed to me the way Soft Cell had.
However, when I first heard this I was blown away. From the opening late-night slumber of Night and Dark I was taken off to feel moods very little music makes me feel now as I get older.
'Open all night' and 'Heart in Velvet' are stand-out tracks, where Marc blends the best of all his skills. The lyric is poetic, the sound is enchanting, his voice is superb and the mood is pure dream.
There are a few over-dramatically camp moments here too though. It's hard not to laugh when he sings 'My love/ smokes like Betty Davis/ In short, vicious drags', but the mood of the song is such a 'I-love-the-the-bad-guy-because-he's-bad' cliche that I suspect Marc had his tongue firmly in cheek when he wrote it. Maybe here he's actually sending up what a Marc Almond song is supposed to be. It's certainly true that no-one else could have written it. However, that said, the sound of the track is on par with the rest of the album.
Add to that the uplifting 'I will survive' lyric of 'Tradgedy', which must be the most positive track on the album to the sultry 'Bad People Kiss', 'Sleepwalker' and 'Midnight Soul' and you have an album deviod of mediocrity.
The two bedroom tracks 'Scarlett' and 'Shrine' are excellent but album fillers as they are the sort of track Marc can write in his sleep. 'Black Kiss' is a little above this, but serves the same purpose.
The low point, in my view is the duet with Siouxsie on 'Threat of Love'. Their voices don't complement each other well and the whole track seems to feel wrong and out of place.
The highlight is by far 'Almost Diamonds' with a lyric and sound that is sensual, mesmerizing and emotional and a duet of vocals superbly matched. After constant listening to this album, this is one track I still haven't tired of. The closest example of sounds and words defining beauty I have ever found.
All in all though, this album should be listened to straight through. It's not a hits album, and I don't feel there are any singles on it as such. It's best listened to by candlelight in the bath...or alone when you want your mind to run free.
This is, indeed, the album Marc was born to make. It will be the one most often held up as his classic and in my view, his best work ever.
