I bought this book with no preconceptions, other than the author is local to me, and has his car fixed by my partner's son in a local garage!
Well, what a pleasant surprise. It's well written, and a real page turner.
If I had a very slight criticism, it would be that I would have liked more detail, but it's quite possible that there was more and it was edited out by an overzealous editor.
It's still a very funny book, and in some ways a real snapshot of a time that is long gone. It has moments of poignancy, as well as some real belly laughs.
Well done David, and I hope we might meet up someday - and I'm looking forward to the next book!

Having read both Ocean Boulevard and jumping ships, I have to say they were both very well written and very amusing, and brought back many memories, I was a cadet at the same time as Dave, and was at college with him, had a few nights out, but never sailed with him as I worked for a different company, Not Norman I identified straight away, now that man is a character, The stories are all I imagine true, but may not actually be first hand, their will be some which are legends within the fleet (as stories were in my old company) and being retold,
However I think the books give a pretty good reflection on a life that has now sadly dissappeared, but I would certainly give them a read, old hands will have there memories triggered and non seafarers will get an interesting and humorous insight, reading one of the books on a flight back to blight I was getting some funny looks from fellow passengers as I was laughing at some of the passages, and I can guarantee the story about the Lecturer & entry through the window at Southgarth,
Dave has changed quite a few names to protect the innocent (and not so innocent) read the books you won't be disappointed, I am still involved in the marine industry and certainly wish those days were here still, and the good bunch of people that were there.

Following the misadventures of a teenager who runs away to join the merchant navy in the 1970s, Ocean Boulevard has a crew of colourful characters, a girl in every port and string of character-building incidents.

It's a fun read and will confirm most of your darkest suspicions about young men in general and sailors in particular.

Delighted I found this book. Never heard of the author but at the price I thought I would give it a go. This is a genuine laugh out loud hilarious read. The exploits of the author on board his merchant ship are brilliant. Recommend this to anyone that wants a fun, interesting read that will leave you smiling

Wonderful book, made me laugh out loud many times. Although it was before my time at sea I found this a compelling read and I am pretty sure thing's have not changed that much. Easy reading, laugh out loud, not a 'Love Letter' to himself (which many of the RN seem to write). Buy it and laugh. :)
