Ruth is at odds with everyone and everything, even her dying granny. The villagers, the weather, and Owen, a sailor on the Primrose. And as what usually happens to independent-minded females in Colonial New England, she is treated as if she actually did wither the crops and has the power to harm innocents and not-so-innocents. Owen Townson, son of the captain of the ship he sails with—charming, annoying, challenging, doesn’t believe this is so, at least. The push and pull of their relationship is volatile in the way a forge, hammer, and anvil strengthen metal, and their interactions are a pleasure to read. She runs away with him, but it is a very long journey to actually be with him in a harsh, cruel landscape peopled with monsters masquerading as heroes and heroes as monsters.
Unforgettable prose and the kind of vivid immersive historical fiction I crave and literally flawless in the execution. A twisting plot driven by the characters, the wind, the wrong choices, by the right choices too late.
I had a hard time putting this down throughout and letting go when I was done. It’s still very alive in my mind a few weeks later. I’ve been hoping to come across something like Beheld by Tarashea Nesbit or the Midwife’s Revolt by Jodi Daynard.
Out Front the Following Sea by Leah Angstman is epic adventure storytelling and will keep you on the edge of your seat. I give it 10 brilliant stars and highly, highly recommend it.

And the romance? I loved it! It’s heartbreaking and uplifting and devastating and hopeful. Two people bound by tragedy find home with each other, yet they are repeatedly torn apart. This couple went on an epic journey riddled with obstacles, and I couldn’t get enough of their story. I must admit, they broke my heart on more than one occasion, and I so wanted them to find some happiness together. Their deep and profound love story isn’t always pretty, but it is honest, complex, breathtaking, and absolutely epic!
I would definitely recommend this read the lovers of historical fiction. It is powerful and poignant, and it captivated me from the very first page!!

Ruth Miner is one of those women—headstrong and independent female. Ruth lost both her parents in a fire for which she, despite being only six at the time, was blamed and branded a witch by the colony. Now, at sixteen, she's an outcast, an orphan living with her grandmother.
Ruth has an escape plan, one she drew up with the help of Owen Townsend, her childhood friend, and leaves her village for another one, no less bound by religious and military dogma than her former home.
This is an atmospheric read, so much so you can almost feel the bitter sea winds blowing. However, the ending seemed a bit unbelievable.
