Wonderful Book. I bought the digital version. Paraphrased the exercises into a Word Template and printed them onto Index cards. I am using those cards as I plot this next novel. So incredibly helpful.

3.0 su 5 stelle Helpful but I prefer the original book 5 marzo 2015

K.M. Weiland explains the process of outlining your novel in a very approachable, understandable manner. That said, if you've bought the original book, as I did, you'll find the material in the workbook rather redundant. Maybe that's just me; while reading the original book I took notes and worked through the steps in my writing journal, making a workbook unnecessary. If you prefer a guided approach, this book is just as thorough as the original format.

4.0 su 5 stelle Wonderful resource, can be a bit confusing sometimes 21 novembre 2015

I bought this book with the intention of using it to learn how to outline my latest work-in-progress. That being said, that's not exactly what this is. (At least I haven't used it for that purpose just yet.)

What it DOES do is help you map out the finer points of the things that won't actually make their way into your book - things like character's motives, possible plot twists, etc. I've filled out a few pages based on the book I was already working on, but I had to skip over a lot - I'm just not there yet with my story. I think it's going to be one of those things where you read everything over, answer the questions you can answer now, then write a little bit - then go back and see where it led you. At least I hope that's going to be a good option - that's sort of what I'm doing with it.

I do wish that they would have included a few more character sketch sections... They have one protagonist and one antagonist for most of the sections involving descriptions. My story is a zombie outbreak story - the antagonist (hordes of zombies) have been pretty much written and rewritten for me, hundreds of times, but I have 8 characters that are directly related to my story. Of course, I could just write the answers on a separate sheet of paper, which I probably should have done anyway, but I guess I was feeling a bit "nostalgic" or something because I wanted to actually write in my workbook. Oh well, if that's the only complaint I can find, it's not too bad.

This workbook will help you think about the aspects of your story that won't actually make it into the book, and may help you decide what to keep and what to throw out. If you use it along with Scrivener, it can definitely help you flesh out some things when you're stuck. In fact, that's when I started working through it: I got stuck in a section of my book that was already outlined. So, I started flipping through the pages, and evaluated the answers to certain questions. Bam. No more stuck-ness.

If you already have a general idea for your story and you want something to help walk you through it to find the rest of the information buried within, this workbook is wonderful. There are a few examples (possibly more in the accompanying book - I didn't actually buy that, but might consider buying it in the future, depending on how long it takes me to work through the workbook with my current story) but for the most part, they don't do anything for you; they just hold your hand. Which is great for me - I hate "guides" that tell you exactly what to do.

5.0 su 5 stelle A Must for a Great Novel 19 maggio 2016

I have always been blown away by the depth of information in K.M. Welland's books on writing. I was concerned about whether or not this "workbook" would work in e book form. I had nothing to worry about. I would highly recommend this book on kindle to anyone wanting to fill their plot-holes and bring their characters to life. Get an empty notebook and work through all of the exercises. Do this for each new story or novel you write. You will be glad you did!

5.0 su 5 stelle The Very Best of the Best 24 ottobre 2016

Well, I've been teaching (and practicing) scriptwriting for over thirty years. I've written books on the subject and dedicated a website to it. But changing from script to novel had me absolutely stuck. Several years ago I found Outlining Your Novel and fell in love with it. This time around (novel number three) I discovered the workbook. And things just fell into place. I got the Kindle version and then bought it in paperback. And I wouldn't (and won't) write another novel without it.

Right now I'm turning a much-produced stageplay into novel. Not as easy as it might sound. But with the help of the Outlining and the companion Structuring books, it's going much faster and much stronger. The characters are changing and the plot is, well, to be stupid about it, thickening.

I've been through all the novel-writing books. I have almost five hundred Kindle books. But these are the ones I'm sticking with. They are simply the best, and I have been recommending them to my scriptwriting students and clients when they want to turn a script into a short story or novel.

You can't go wrong with these books. Honestly. I really have read them all.
