4.0 su 5 stelle The fellowship of the orbs 11 dicembre 2011

Pretty well-written fantasy with some fairly typical motifs. You've got your basic village-raised boy who turns out to be the 'Chosen One' who is destined to go on and save the land from the 'Dark One'. Difference is that Kallum also happens to be a prince, calm and capable, unassuming and brimming with confidence, who takes to leadership like a fish to water. He reminded me a lot of Inda from the Sherwood Smith books, raised from birth for a set role to serve the kingdom and has grown up with companions with decided roles in which to aid him.

Most of the book takes place on the road with Kallum and his companions going about their quest - unfortunately this could also be called the weak portion of the book. There are some nice action scenes and exciting plot/character developments that occur during this time, but they are spaced in between entire chapters of monotony. Events seem to happen in a reoccurring cycle, in that the companions battle their pursuers, then are faced with long weeks of travel until their destination, arrive to complete their task, then repeat. Only, the author chooses to narrate the travel and elaborate on the long days in which nothing happens and it becomes a chore not to skip ahead, especially after this occurs more than a handful of times.

Additionally, Kallum becomes less likable the heavier the mantle of leadership becomes. He begins to second-guess himself, is plagued with indecision and regrets, and goes through a gamut of emotions from frustration to depression. All of which is understandable given his position, yet the 8th or 9th time this happens I felt like reaching through the pages to throttle him. The romance between him and the love interest develops at a snails pace (like most everything else in the story) and the part where this volume would end was fairly predictable.

Nevertheless, the book was decent and well worth the price (certainly better than the majority of fantasy I find these days). The difference in characters have a little for everybody and Kallum definitely has his moments. I eagerly await the next book in the series and will hope the pace picks up again.

4.0 su 5 stelle A Slow Burn 20 dicembre 2011

If you're looking for a lengthy fantasy tale, The Path of Light could be just the book for you. It presents itself largely as a story about a journey, where the farther the characters travel, the more they learn about their quest, and themselves. There is a slow start to muscle your way through, but the pace steadily picks up.

The author has a good concept of the people, places and items in her fantasy. She is never one to pass up an opportunity to express certain details.

Unfortunately, while the author delivers an interesting, very well-thought out story, there are jarring aspects within the novel. It needed a bit more editing - some of the passages were messy or jagged.

Beneath that rough exterior though, The Path of Light makes for a good read. It isn't as strong as some other tales that I've read, but this first foray into the world will surely lead into some very interesting reading going forward.

Thats what came to mind when i read this. I understand many book can ahve the same said about them, but most not to this degree. Heres a quick summary, boy is said to be a chosen one, boy goes on quest with his friends to find a bunch of orbs. Boy meets girl while on quest.....Get the point? I found the characters bland and stereotypical and the plot OOO so predictable.

All in all if you want a great read that will keep yopu turning pages to learn what happens next, look elsewhere. If you want a book to kill a few hours in between better reads, give it a shot. Keep in mind this book is 2.99 and i can honestly say in MY opinion, not worth it. I get better books at .99.
4.0 su 5 stelle WELL WRITTEN AND ENTERTAINING BOOK. NEEDS A NEW EDITOR!!!!!!!!!!!!! 20 gennaio 2014

This new writer has a great talent for writing and a great imagination! The only reason I gave this 4 stars rather than five is that the editor of this book was terrible at the job. There are numerous misspellings and grammatical errors that should have been corrected before publishing this very well written and entertaining book.

As a fan of Robert Heinlein, David Eddings, and Robert Jordan for years, I read this book with a critical eye but soon became caught up in the story. Only the editorial mishaps diminished my enjoyment.

3.0 su 5 stelle Good Story - Great Start - Drags in the Middle 17 gennaio 2012

This is an epic fantasy where Prince Kallum is the prophesized Chosen who will defeat the Dark One and bring prosperity to Vlandamyuir. The Chosen and his companions embark on a quest to find the mystical orbs necessary to defeat the Dark One. This is the first book in a series. As of today's date, I could not find any information on Amazon or on the Author's web pages as to how many books are intended in series.

I really enjoyed the start of this epic as the Author does a great job introducing the young hero, Kallum, and his boyhood companions. Characters are well thought out and first quarter of the book is devoted to understanding them through some minor trials over the course of a few years. This established a strong bond with characters and generated much interest in the story to come.

Towards the middle of the story, I started having difficulty keeping interest due to a combination of factors. First, 3 more characters are added to bring quest up to 10 members and some initial characters start to fade into the background. Second, there is too much petty to childlike dialog and actions among the quest members. Third, quest is too mechanical or "connect the dots" for my tastes. Get the clue for the first orb, find the first orb, get the clue, find the second orb, get the clue .... Lastly, although Author setup an epic conflict, plot progression was not as epic as I would like. Overall, I felt that story lost significant momentum after an awesome start.

The conclusion was strong as it setup interesting tensions for next book. I plan on reading the second book in this series when available since I still see the potential for a very good epic fantasy. Overall plot is an interesting epic struggle which I look forward to reading unfold. First book did not make adequate plot progression for my tastes but I am hopeful that second book will remedy that concern.

The Path of Light is 7,872 Kindle locations long. Longer books, such as books in Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series, can range from 15,000 to 20,000 plus Kindle locations. Standard length novels seem to run in the 4,500 to 7,000 plus Kindle location range.
