A haunting saga of dedicated love, old promises and conflicts of patriotism set in the turbulent Middle East. A British Army officer returns to the Mediterranean Island of Cyprus to discover he has a son from a passionate love affair eighteen years before. Real and terrifying problems surface. His seventeen year old son is now a terrorist fighting for independence from British colonial rule. His former love has disappeared. There’s more. A Greek assassin from Salonika is on Cyprus. His mission? To assassinate the British Governor and a mysterious “Third Man” as well as sabotage UN talks. The problem is compounded when the officer finds his son has joined the assassin’s special team in the mountains which is being hunted by crack regiments of the British Army. The entire story is one man’s fight to keep a promise over incredible odds and get his son and the mother back together. The saga is set against an actual historical background of Cyprus in its last turbulent days as a British Colony with Turkish Cypriots fighting Greek Cypriots who are in turn fighting the British for their independence.

Robert Egby's journalistic talents and experiences come through in the telling of a tale that takes place in earlier times. The title of his first novel,"Pentadaktylos: Love, Promises and Patriotism in the Last Days of Colonial Cyprus," gives almost a complete description of what the reader will find between the pages of this well crafted story.

Egby's characters are developed along with a moving plot. Both characters and story come together in front of the historical backdrop of Cypriot independence. The place descriptions and portrayal of the political climate in Cyprus and the U.K. are all very believable and probably based on personal experience. The story is filled with mystery and suspense making the reader want to discover the outcome of each sub plot. The author provides a satisfying epilogue to keep the readers from wondering about what happened to each of the characters years after the story takes place.

This book deserves the strong rating because it was painstakingly researched and the plot moves along well with the history. The book's cover doesn't do justice to the strong romantic theme that readers are sure to enjoy. There is the odd typo and formatting error common among first time self-published authors, but not enough to distract the reader from appreciating the story. I look forward to reading other novels from this author.
