actress, a writer of books, a Playboy interviewer and contemporary of
some of the greatest minds of the century, a journalist for several
publications, including Huffington Post, a literary critic and a teacher
at Widener University and Rosemont College. Considering that she has
also been closely involved with such luminaries as Claude Picasso, Peter
Sellers and Norman Mailer, she has her stories to tell, and she does, in
her latest memoir, "Picasso's Ghost".
Anyone expecting a real-life Jackie Collins escapist novel will be
surprised to find points of connection with the author. Ms Mallory
doesn't hold back in describing her experiences with the modeling and
movie worlds or her experiences with high-profile artists; however, the
basis for her account of those years has most to do with how our
parents, particularly our fathers, shape our lives. Even as Claude
Picasso and his siblings struggled with living under their father Pablo
Picasso's shadow both professionally and personally, Ms Mallory's own
father and family suffered from his having had a lobotomy to treat what
was discovered to be Parkinson's disease. Shame and loss of fathers both
living and dead is not uncommon with many, and these issues Ms Mallory
explores with such poignancy that the backdrop of the glittering worlds
of Parisian artists and seedy Hollywood of the '70's become secondary.
Both Claude Picasso and Ms Mallory tried to escape the shadows cast by
their fathers by striving for success, with varying results. Ms Mallory
succeeded by overcoming alcoholism, self-deception, and by
understanding those whose frailties devastated their children. In the
process she found her true calling as a writer and teacher. Through
compassion, humour and a great gift for verbal expression, she makes her
world as familiar as our own.

For this reader, the true grit of the book comes in the second half when Claude is largely out of the picture after winning his lawsuit and inheriting a chunk of his father's millions. Carole doesn't spare herself in her raw, honest depiction of an alcoholic on the verge of losing everything - love, fame, money, and a budding film career. Her superb accounts of going to a celebrity wedding while drunk and of sinking her own ships under the influence contribute a serious message. Her revelations of the sexual side of this male-dominated industry may not be news but they are proof of how up-and-coming Hollywood actresses were targeted, victimized, and blackmailed into a sex for favors situation.
Some parts are disjointed and repetitious, written as if the author went into a mental fugue and just let out her feelings and reactions without any editing. However, it is Carole's portrayal of a woman desperately hanging onto the remnants of love that makes this book a memorable read.

Having climbed to the top of Hollywood heap, Mallory never forgets her humble beginings nor her love or responsibility for family and friends. Unlike today when we are bombarded by the escapades of Lindsay Lohane, Amanda Bynes and Justin Bieber, it is so refreshing to see that humanity, dignity and humor have not been ripped from the beating heart of Carole Mallory. Mallory's catharsis in PG hopefully will bring peace to her life and more great reading for the us all.
