5.0 su 5 stelle Wonderful novel about women artists in Renaissance Florence 2 giugno 2016
Di Vicki J. Kondelik - Pubblicato su
Formato: Copertina flessibile Acquisto verificato
Donna Russo Morin has been one of my favorite authors for several years. I have read all her books, and this is one of my favorites. She paints a vivid portrait of Renaissance Florence and a group of six women artists, of different ages and from various walks of life, who must practice their art in secret because it was forbidden to women at the time. In 1478, members of the Pazzi family, rivals to Florence's ruling Medici family, attempt to assassinate the brothers Lorenzo and Giuliano de' Medici during Mass in the Duomo. Giuliano is brutally murdered, and Lorenzo, who is wounded but survives, takes revenge on anyone he suspects of being part of the conspiracy. Two of the women are eyewitnesses to the murder, and another member of the group, Lapaccia, disappears at the same time as a painting that supposedly portrays the conspirators. With help from a young Leonardo Da Vinci, the women attempt to reproduce the portrait. Leonardo, who believes that art should be open to both men and women, serves as a mentor to the group and helps them to grow as artists. Will the women find Lapaccia and avoid becoming victims of Lorenzo's revenge?

All of the women in the group are great characters, but three especially stand out. Viviana, who has suffered for years at the hands of her abusive husband, secretly teaches herself to paint after reading the diaries of her cousin Caterina, a nun who became one of the first women artists in Italy. Isabetta, whose husband is dying, harbors feelings for Leonardo which he will never be able to return. Mattea, one of the youngest members of the circle, is in love with a young man who is far above her station. This is the first in a trilogy, so I hope we will learn more about all the women of the group in future books. I am looking forward to the next one.

This is the first book I have read by this Author. She has the amazing ability to draw you into the story through her wonderful descriptions of not only the characters but the city itself! Having lived in Italy as a teenager and traveling throughout Europe, I have had the privelage of seeing mant many of Da Vinci's paintings in person. After reading this book, i now have a greater appreciation not only for his brilliance, but he has somehow become a man, a human being living in such a turbulant time and struggling with his own personal issues. The other chacters are equally as complex and intriguing! The story itself is a brilliant mystery leaving you hungry for the next book! Five stars Ms Morin!! I couldn't put it down!!

5.0 su 5 stelle Oh the art! Oh Florence! History! 28 maggio 2016

Many a time have I finished a book and quickly went to buy more of the same author, or more of the same genre. At the end of this book my compulsion was to buy books of art by some of the artists beautifully represented in this lovely book. (Yes, I will gladly purchase more books from this ingenious writer.) i now have two new books, one of daVinci's pencil sketches and one of Botticelli's many paintings and frescoes.

This book was an interesting and compelling story that combined art, friendship, mystery, feminism, duty and devotion. I love Viviana as there was so much of me in her, or her in me. I do also admit to being partial to the setting of this book, Firenze is my favorite city of every one I have ever visited. The necessary descriptions were told both beautifully and painfully. I want to have a teacher like daVinci! To have a group with solidarity!
I loved this book and look forward to reading what happens next!
Thank you so much M's. Morin

5.0 su 5 stelle Entertaining, Beautifully Crafted Journey to Renaissance Florence 25 giugno 2016

What’s not to like? Portrait of a Conspiracy is a beautifully written book about conspiracy, murder, culture and artists in Renaissance Florence. My favorite genre is historical fiction because I don’t only want to learn about places and times: I want to experience history; I want to get to know historical figures personally. Morin did exactly that – transported me to Renaissance Florence, where I saw the rebellion against the Medici family personally, as if I were Vivianna, Mona Marrone. Too often I become frustrated with authors that don’t paint the story (pardon the pun) clearly, so it’s although I’m watching a story unfold through a cloudy lens. But while reading Portrait of a Conspiracy, Vivanna was vivid in my imagination, in her forest green gown, dancing the night away with a handsome stranger just as I could almost smell the bloodshed in the church. Perfectly executed. Highly recommended!

Portrait of a Conspiracy is such a marvelous book. Since I am a fan of art history and happen to love fiction, this was exactly the book for me. Aside from being beautifully written, the book invites readers to come to know the main characters, my favorite of which are Viviana and of course, Leonardo Da Vinci. Perhaps I'd never thought of him as a person before, a person of flesh and blood. One of the best compliments I can give to Donna Russo Morin is that she changed my way of thinking. She brought a long-dead artist whom I have admired for years, brightly to life. This is a complex story of betrayal, deceit, and most of all, love of friends and the magnificent world of art. I was so sorry to see it end that I'm reading it now a second time! Well done, Donna. Well done!
