Story Behind the Book

When this book was originally published in 1969, James Braga understood that in order for God’s Word to impact His sheep in a life-changing way, the messenger had to do his job exceedingly well. Now, more than thirty years later, the guidance Braga provides pastors, youth leaders, and speakers of all kinds for preparing and delivering effective Bible messages stands stronger than ever. Time-tested and true, his words provide insight, guidance, and tangible steps for answering God’s call to deliver His message with excellence.

From the Trade Paperback edition.

James Braga was a missionary to China, a pastor, and for twenty-six years professor of homiletics, methods of Bible study, and missions at Multnomah Bible College in Portland, Oregon. Following his retirement in 1975, he continued as the school's chaplain for several more years. His Books How to Prepare Bible Messages and How to Study the Bible have remained in print in multiple languages for more than thirty-five years. In 1994, Braga died at the age of eighty-seven but his dedication to overseas missionaries and teachers left a lasting legacy to the church. SPANISH BIO: James Braga fue misio

5.0 su 5 stelle The best book for beginners 31 dicembre 2007
Di Timothy J Lewis - Pubblicato su
Formato: Copertina flessibile
I used this book in my freshman year of college in our preacher boy class. Even after seminary, I believe it is the most well written book I am familiar with for students of the Bible who want to learn how to put together a sermon, devotional, Sunday School lesson, or a simple challenge.

Braga uses a method of preparation that has not been typically used in conservative Christianity. That method is defined as propositional teaching/preaching. Instead of approaching a portion of Scripture and drawing attention to every idea in the text, he teaches the reader how to pull out one single thought or "big idea" to center the lesson or sermon around. A sermon does not have to be about 100 different topics that no one will remember. In fact, Braga emphasizes the importance of letting your audience leave with one complete theme that has been reinforced multiple times in multiples ways throughout your whole message. In my opinion, this is the clearest method of teaching for the listener.

Braga covers topical messages (sermons/lessons taken from many different parts of Scripture), textual messages (sermons/lessons taken for one individual piece of Scripture and reinforced with other passages), and expository messages (sermons/lessons taken solely from one individual text.)

I am not sure what paper quality has to do with reading this book, maybe someone should have exchanged the book for a better copy. The book is perfectly legible and an excellent purchase. I recommend it to all church members who want to learn how to teach the Bible.

5.0 su 5 stelle standard preaching text 11 giugno 2003
Di Un cliente - Pubblicato su
Formato: Copertina flessibile
This is basisally the standard preaching text by which all others should be measured. Because it is older, it would best be complimented with something like Johnston and Robinson's text on postmodern preaching, or even something fun like Troeger's text on preaching in a multimedia culture.

I have difficulty writing prose. This book has a great chapter on how to handle "transitions" between different points in your discussion. That's just what I need. Thanks!

I Really love this book, I am Pastor and have been for many years I believe this book is a key tool that every Pastor and church leader must have. I first revived this book while in Bible College, and truth be told blew it off, but since that freshman year really found the need for the breakdowns in this book as a key to my success on the pulpit. It really does help you get all the God wants his people to receive, it was very hard for me to get all my thoughts on paper in a way that could be understood. This book helped me to create outlines that would let the spirit of God flow and me to flow with him in my notes. This really is a must have for the young Pastor just starting out or the Pastor who has been preaching for years but struggles to your get your thought from God on paper so you can get them to the people, this is a tool that every spiritual mail needs!
