"Please don't buy this book! Once people start making better presentations, mine won’t look so good. (But if you truly want to learn what works and how to do it right, Garr is the man to learn from.)"
Seth Godin
Speaker and Blogger
Author, Meatball Sundae

"Garr is a beacon of hope for frustrated audiences everywhere. His design philosophy and fundamental principles bring life to messages and can invigorate careers. His principles of simplicity are as much a journey of the soul as they are restraint of the mouse."
Nancy Duarte
CEO, Duarte Design

"Presentation Zen is just fantastic. Best of all it's not another recipe book about “how to make slides” — this is about re-imagining how your entire presentation will work together as a persuasive and integrated show, from conception through delivery. Awesome."
Merlin Mann

la mia esperenza è assai lontana ma capisco che poi se il problema è avere qualche cosa da raccontare ogni spunto è buono per tirare la carretta.

4.0 su 5 stelle Very good but expensive 7 luglio 2012
Di Robert Johnston - Pubblicato su
Formato: Copertina flessibile Acquisto verificato
Presentation Zen provides an 'approach', not a method. I thoroughly enjoyed Reynolds US-expat view from his Japanese corporate perspective. His use of the `bento box' was a detail that the frequent traveler on Japanese rail will immediately recall as curiously `different' but just as quickly forgotten as the info overload of Japanese culture re-captures your minds eye. Reynolds frequent use of the bento box as presentation `zen' might pass over the unfamiliar reader. Native Japanese presentations, in my experience, are either garishly information overloaded, or best not used at all. So, I've never seen the elegant expression Reynolds serves up in the Japanese corporation.

I periodically require an intellectual Red Bull on this topic of "Presentation" after delivering a string of Power Points that just seemed to be so great when you created them, but the reception feels underwhelming. If you sense the feeling I'm talking about, this nagging self-assessment that happens in your head, it needs sating. Presentation Zen does a great job re-centering the process.

You can get very screwed up listening to the opinions of the picayune professional that confuse the quality of `bullet points' for the forest of the total. Opting to self-tune method and skills is my preferred choice to yield the greatest payback.

"Zen" is a very good opportunity to reflect on your method.

5.0 su 5 stelle Simple cognitive psychology concept 4 ottobre 2010
Di Cam Davis - Pubblicato su

People cannot read AND listen at the same time.

Rather than presenting slides that are too full of words, show an interesting picture that is (or is not) somehow related to what you're talking about. When your audience gazes at the slide they are still listening to your voice rather than reading the words on your slide! This presentation style is unintimidating and entertaining for the audience; and although it is more work for the speaker, the presentations are more interesting and memorable.

Other reviewers gave the book low star ratings, one reviewer saying that she is a scientist and that scientists need presentations that convey scientific data better than PresentationZen allows. I am a scientist too, and she is correct: your slides will not convey the scientific data. That reviewer missed something, however: the SPEAKER conveys the scientific data and the audience listens to the speaker.

Garr Reynolds doesn't say to never put words or tables into your slides - the idea is to stop with the persistent (and dull) slides full of the same words that are coming out of your mouth. Doing a hybrid PresentationZen presentation isn't the antithesis to some dogmatic principle of "Zen" presentations, and you probably won't go to prison if you don't follow this style to the letter.

I can understand that PresentationZen is a difficult concept for some. It goes against all the established ideas about PowerPoint presentations, and it is (at first) a lot of work for the speaker. But if you see one or give one, you'll be hooked, especially after all the compliments.

I've just finished "Presentation Zen" by Garr Reynolds. This book is also available in Russian, but the cover of the Russian edition makes me sick: it destroys the main idea of the book before you even open it! I can speculate that translation is poor too, so please, if you choose to read this particular book - go get the original one.

At first glance this book is not a how-to guide. But on the other hand it really is a step-by-step instruction, which helps you do your best. In fact, to understand Mr. Reynold's advice, ideas and approach in making and presenting presentations you have to understand all this Zen stuff. It was all new for me, all this "less is better" and other ideas (by the way, you can find most of this Zen ideas in Steve Jobs presentations and in most of Apple's products). However, this book is more about philosophy of making better things, than about preparing presentations in PowerPoint, Keynote or whatever.

Anyway, as I said before, this is the step by step instruction. Instruction of how not to make presentations and instruction of how to make something memorable, bright, useful and nice. Even if you never use any slideware, you'll get some interesting ideas of presenting yourself to the audience, or techniques of introducing your ideas to public, or (OMG!) ideas of how to use slideware properly! :)
What's your favorite site with book reviews? ;)

Also, pay attention to Kindle format: Kindle DX is ok for this book - you'll see all the examples, but on the ordinary Kindle (2 gen) some of the pictures won't show.

3.0 su 5 stelle good advice that could be shared in a few pages 7 giugno 2013
Di Flatfive - Pubblicato su
Formato: Copertina flessibile Acquisto verificato
Like most of the business-targeted books I've seen, this
spreads a few good ideas thinly across many pages. Even
with lots of redundancy, the book can be read in a couple
of hours.

I agree with many of Reynolds' points, especially the problem
for the audience of trying to read slide text while listening
to the speaker, and the need for the presenter to clarify
the message "off line", before working on slides. But:

- much of the advice is targeted towards "pitch"-type
presentations (it wouldn't do for me to use a slide with
two words on it and a stock photo of a crying child)

- the frequent references to Japan and use of Japanese
words was gratuitous and distracting

It's ironic that the author decries "slideuments", but
the book itself straddles the line between a traditional
book and slideware.

If in doubt, get a used copy.

5.0 su 5 stelle If You Speak in Front of Audiences, BUY THIS! 31 marzo 2014
Di Robin Jay - Pubblicato su
Formato: Copertina flessibile Acquisto verificato
Garr Reynold's advice has changed the way I present. I own a speakers bureau and have seen it all. The ZEN method of presentation is 180* from what most presenters use. Since changing to this style, my PPTs and presentations are more engaging, never "death by PPT," and I get tremendous feedback. I'm never competing with my slides. Some presenters think PPT will take away from their heartfelt stories. I can assure you, if you're telling a story about your mother, letting the audience see a full-screen image or video of her will make her more REAL. Video in a PPT is the best! I follow Garr online now and his recent TedX Kyoto talk is brilliant. I STRONGLY Recommend you invest in this book. Your audiences will thank you!
