Descrizione prodotto

This edition includes 11 original interior illustrations by world renowned artist Santiago Caruso. Bestselling author Joe R. Lansdale (Cold in July, Hap and Leonard series, Bubba Ho-Tep) makes a return to horror with the dark and intense new novella Prisoner 489 fully illustrated by world-renowned artist Santiago Caruso.

On an island with a prison for the most evil and powerful criminals in the world, a new prisoner is strapped to the electric chair for execution. After multiple surges of electricity and nearly knocking out power to the entire island, the prisoner is finally dead. The staff buries him in the prison graveyard with a simple marker baring three numbers: 489.

After the body is buried, a violent storm rocks the islands and a staff member goes missing. The crew rushes into the storm, searching for their lost comrade. They find that the burial site of prisoner 489 has been unearthed, and the body that was inside has gone missing. With a horrific finding and strange noises around them, a powerful threat is closing in. It’s a threat that they thought was impossible, and it will force them into a battle for their lives.

"Veteran horror/thriller author Lansdale (Hot in December) tells a tight, spooky tale about what happens when an executed prisoner doesn’t stay dead." - Publishers Weekly

4.0 su 5 stelle A fun modern retelling of a folk tale by a master storyteller 16 giugno 2016

I am a big fan of Joe Lansdale's work so of course I had to read this novella by him. It's basically a modern telling of a folk tale but Lansdale puts his spin on it, storyteller that he is, and makes it a fun read.

Two islands - one a prison island with the worst of the worst incarcerated there and the other smaller island the home to three prisoners or past prisoners who now take care of the prison cemetery - Bernard, Wilson, and Toggle.

Lansdale brings his characters alive word by glorious word and I especially enjoyed the illustrations in this story done by Santiago Caruso.

5.0 su 5 stelle Can't get enough of Lansdale. 20 dicembre 2014

Anytime I can get my hands on a Joe Lansdale novel or short story, I set aside quality time due to the fact that I know I'm in for an eat it up in one setting scenario. Saying that, I loved this story, yes it was short and it went way off of the course I first expected it to, but in typical Lansdale style, it entertained me, painted a great picture in my head and fulfilled me just as I like in a good read. If you've never read one of Joes stories, shame on you. Get one, any one and see for yourself why Joe R. Lansdale is the most underrated writer going. To me, he's the best.

I thought this was a wonderfully fun and exciting horror story. I liked the use of Jewish mythology, which doesn't get utilized very much. I actually thought that could have been expanded on a bit. I thought the characters were vivid and engaging. The pace was fast and I just tore through this novella. Thumbs up.

Imagine the Shawshank Redemption meets Hammer films and you're in the territory of this fine novella. Highly recommended for the discerning reader.

Slightly overhyped, well illustrated and gives away the punchline in act 2. But maybe I'm just jaded. It's a quick and painless read, but I doubt I'll ever re read it.
