Sinossi

Life in the Greater Communicating Universe isn’t easy.
But death: now that has its perks.

For Rollie Tsmorlood, escaping a prison planet that no one ever survives… well, it’s more than a smart lifestyle choice. It’s the perfect chance to unleash some covert revenge.

But when someone steals the number three for ransom, suddenly Rollie’s not the only one looking for justice. Universal systems have ground to a halt. A third of the universe is trapped in a mysterious viral field. Even the Earth’s stuck in a looky-no-touchy zone.

Add to this, Rollie’s beloved ship has been sold for space salvage, and what’s an industrious dead man to do?

Earthling pal Bertram Ludlow knows. He’s learned a lot since ducking death himself. He’s discovered the thrill of second chances, the power of cold, hard cash...and he’s more than certain his planet’s endured enough.

Soon, Rollie and Bertram are caught up in a confounding case of cosmic conspiracy, two-faced dames, hot pursuit and lukewarm vending machine seafood.

Can Rollie and Bertram track down the numeroterrorist, free the GCU and rescue Rollie’s greatest nemesis… before their own numbers are up?

L'autore

Jenn Thorson always knew she wanted to be a writer; it was the C+ in Penmanship that initially held her back. By the age of 11, she'd written her first mystery novel, Key to the Blue Moon, which her secretary— er, Mom—was good enough to type up for her. It was a raging hit among the two people she knew. Spurred by her dramatic success, she went on to write other works, an experience that found her cluing into the Mystery genre, flirting with the Melodramatic Teen style, and becoming better versed in the Embarrassing Poetry of Which We Shall Never Speak Again school of writing. Yet, oddly, no one stopped her from attending Carnegie Mellon University for Creative and Professional Writing. And it was here she discovered that humor was in her heart. This was a surprise, since the funny bone usually gets so much press. Soon Jenn graduated from Carnegie Mellon and, with an inconvenient bent toward eating regularly, she took a job as a technical writer for a software development company. In the years that followed, she would move from the joys of explaining where the File menu was, to managing the marketing of the company's product line. Marketing, she realized, involved a gleeful combination of Making Stuff Up and Actually Getting Paid for It; so she became a full-time marketing writer and project manager in a local advertising firm. She also continued to hone her fiction, and her first published story, "The Last Great Play of Rosie Cosnowski" made its way into the Timber Creek Review. Since those days, Jenn Thorson's stories have been published in the Humor Press, the magazine for the Lewis Carroll Society of North America, and Romantic Homes magazine. Her books currently include There Goes the Galaxy, The Purloined Number and Tryfling Matters.

5.0 su 5 stelle Great humorous SciFi! 18 febbraio 2014

Jenn Thorson has captured witty humor and spread it over the pages of her series "There Goes the Galaxy."

This book, "The Purloined Number," the second of the series, continues the journey of the characters from the first book, adding depth, expanding your view of their personalities, and shows their tremendous growth in the face of the unknown. Using puns and wit, the Greater Communicating Universe is shown in ever greater detail, pulling you into the world and story as though you are living it yourself and can't believe you are there, being a simple human that never expected to encounter other-worldly life. Despite the fantastical world of the GCU with all it's quirks and oddities, it's easy to feel right at home among the incredible amounts of Marketing and commercialism (much like the "Western World" of Earth), crazy situations that seem both barely believable and yet head-shakingly familiar, and a few well-developed, strong valued characters that drive the story along. I imagine if I were thrown into this universe unexpectedly that I would react with a similar amount of incredulity and comfort that the character Bertram does.

Jenn uses a mixture of subtle and obvious humor to set a light tone over a deep and serious story that captures the human spirit wonderfully. The story drives you along right to the end, so smoothly that you don't expect to be at the end of the book so quickly, yet you feel satisfied, as there is a definite conclusion to the primary conflict of this book. I look forward to next book very much! I would say more, but don't want to indicate any more of what happens in this book, so as to not spoil it for anyone.

Like others, I would say that if you enjoyed Douglas Adams' most popular series, you will most likely enjoy this one, but I would also say that if you *DIDN'T* enjoy Douglas Adams, you should still give "There Goes the Galaxy" a read, as it is quite different enough that it stands on its own style of humor and wit. (Not as dry as the British-dry style humor in "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.")

I strongly encourage you to pick up a copy of this book and give it a read, but would also encourage you to read the first book in the series, "There Goes the Galaxy," first, as you will get much more out of this story by doing so. Enjoy!
5.0 su 5 stelle The Purloined Number is even better than the first--WOW!! 9 novembre 2013

I became addicted to Jenn Thorson's writing when I read the first book of this series, There Goes the Galaxy. In this sequel, The Purloined Number, she takes her characters, plot, humor, and most especially the writing to a completely new level.

Combining humor and science fiction is an arduous task; one that few writers have the talent to undertake. The Purloined Number will not disappoint! The Purloined Number is one of the most creative works I have ever read--in fact, not only does it combine wonderfully dry humor and science fiction--but this book is also a thriller: you will not be able to put it down.

I do recommend reading There Goes the Galaxy first because you will appreciate the development of Rollie, Bertram and the rest of the wonderfully characters even more in this beautifully scripted sequel. My prediction? Jenn Thorson is soon going to become a well-known author; it is only a matter of time. I just loved it!

As follow up to THERE GOES THE GALAXY, this is just as fun and entertaining. The author has really found her knack for conveying her personality into her writing. I found myself eagerly awaiting the next occurrence of witty pop culture word play as I did the next clue in the mystery of who has perpetrated the books plot....and how.

I would highly recommend the reading of, or at least becoming seriously familiar with , book one of the trilogy before taking on this book. Not simply to bolster sales - which I admit is a bonus for the author and the Indie Community - but because most of the characters in this book are fundamentally established in the previous opus, as is the general linguistic tenor.

As one criticism of the book, I would note to the author that some sort linguistic lexicon be supplied either as a preface to the story, or as an appendix. It could be a great help to the person who chooses to jump in the THE PURLOINED NUMBER feet first without the groundwork of THERE GOES THE GALAXY.

That being said, don't miss out on the riotous read. And beware the naysayers who have denounced the series as being too DOUGLAS ADAMS-ish. What better form of flattery than to have an artist's style mimicked either intentionally or not.

I rate this book 4 stars out of 5 on the following scale:
+ poor read
++ so-so read
+++ good read
++++ excellent read
+++++ life changing read

5.0 su 5 stelle Even Better Than the First Book 6 ottobre 2013

For those of you that have read There Goes the Galaxy you will be pleasantly surprised with the character development of Rollie and Bertram. The story is great with enough plot twists to keep you guessing. I can't wait for third book.

For those that have not read the first book Jenn has woven in enough details to give you the background needed to enjoy this book without reading the first one, but I would recommend getting the first book just because it is fun to read.

For you hard sci-fi fans out there, remember this is comedy, relax and give it a read. I think you will like it.

I loved the first book in the series and when I saw a second...bought it right then. Jenn has gone out of her way to bring the characters from the first book back and slap them around a few more times for old times sake.
The second book made for another wonderful read. I do love that a writer can create a set of characters you just need to know more about. One of the "it's way to late to still be reading and work is going to suck tomorrow but, I just need to read for five more minutes. That's all, really." Kind of books.
If you read the first get ready for a comfortable ride in the co-pilot seat of an ICV. I not, Get It Now!!! Then come back her and get this one.
And for you Jenn, great job and please keep us up to date on Bertram, "Dax" and the rest of the gang. It has been a great trip around the GCU and inner workings of your mind. And what a trip it's been.
