Sinossi

Genital mutilation in the USA has been a well-kept secret. "The Rape of Innocence" is an autobiographical account of a white Anglo-Saxon Protestant woman who discovered she had been the victim of clitoridectomy as a child in Kansas in the 1950s.

The author is a therapist who deals with trauma. In her work, she has met many other American women and men who were genitally mutilated as children and adults. Could you -- or someone you love -- have been cut too?

This book may explain the U.S. epidemic of sexual dysfunction, anger, anxiety, depression -- unresolved psychological trauma from circumcision. Now that the word is out, the healing can begin.

Female genital mutilation (FGM) and circumcision aren't exotic tragedies that only exist in primitive lands; the gruesome reality is that they still occur right here in the modern "civilized" West. A combination of ignorance and financial greed sometimes overwhelms people's natural humanity, and many individuals as well as society suffer the consequences eventually.

Something I found very interesting is that the author was aware of her mother's gross incompetence as a parent in general, long before she discovered she had been the victim of a clitoridectomy. Doctors who commit the gruesome crime aren't necessarily sneaky monsters; they often merely collude with a cruel and insensitive mother.

However, the author writes in a casual style, too casual for my taste, with many claims unsupported by references, using the language of "the heart," to promote the outdated idea of repressed memories and what she calls "clinical hypnotherapy," peppered with quotes from the Bible.

She also seems unaware that the clitoris is now believed to encompass the erectile internal vestibule tubes, and hence traditional clitoridectomy only excises the tip of the iceberg. I think what is probably much more devastating to mental health and sexual function (and much more widespread in the West today) is the mental castration resulting from neural atrophy following lack of stimulation during development.

The book is successful in describing the author's personal tragedy, and valuable in calling attention to the problems of FGM, circumcision and the international scandal of unnecessary C-sections, and also offers a useful list of resources. The author deserves a lot of credit for writing this book, since most women aren't even able to talk about FGM. But surely this important topic deserves a more careful and exhaustive treatment.

The author's journey to discover brutality that had been committed against her as a child is surprisingly compelling and an easy read. Male, female, intersex, and maternal genital cutting are discussed.

On reading this memoir, I came to realize the full truth of a story my mother told me about an event in her childhood. Her family members were the poorest people in a small farming community in Kansas during the Great Depression. There were 3 girls, of which my mother was the youngest, and their baby brother. A group of townspeople came and got the girls one day, and took them to the doctor. My mother said that the doctor caused her pain and then laughed at her when she cried.

I now understand that my mother and her sisters were victims of forced genital cutting. It explains the promiscuity and alcoholism of one sister. It explains the borderline personality disorders of my mother and her oldest sister.

Patricia Robinett opposes forced genital cutting of ALL children, whether they are female, male, or intersex, as do I. Forced genital cutting of American girls became illegal in 1997. I hope that it will someday be illegal to violate the human right to genital autonomy all ALL children, everywhere.

Patricia writes in a conversational tone, recounting her memories as they come to her, making this book an easy and pleasant story to read about a very unpleasant but very real topic. This practice that has been largely ignored is brought to the forefront of your thoughts and gives you a strong desire to do something about this horrific act which is performed upon children to this day. The author gives one pause to consider the long term ramifications of something seemingly as simple as circumcision of infant boys. While it is clear that it is mutilation of little girls, we now must question that it is the same for boys. Patricia writes with clarity and subdued passion, great knowledge and strength of purpose.
