4.0 su 5 stelle Extremely Enlightening and Valuable..... 21 marzo 2013

This is one of the few books that addresses the psychological barriers to riding. It is W A Y past saddling up and just
DOING IT. It is filled with exercises, experience and methods for the rider who is a good rider, but has
Acquired a psychological fear of riding. I immersed myself in horses a few years go -no fear. Then after a few incidents I have contracted a paralyzing fear of riding. Fear of riding doesn't necessarily mean lack of knowledge of horses or the inability to ride. It 's all in the mind, and this is what's this book addresses. I am slowly making progress.

4.0 su 5 stelle Many Good Techniques 11 maggio 2014

This book has a lot of good ideas and techniques for someone with really serious fear issues. Most of the techniques are very similar to what I do as a trainer to help a horse to overcome fears of being ridden, it was very interesting to see the techniques applied to the human psychology of fear. It also is very helpful for a riding instructor to understand what your students might be feeling and how to help them to release some of their fears so they can progress.

I was slightly disappointed though, because the title and first few chapters indicate it will teach you how to banish all fear in the saddle, allowing you to ride like your wildest dreams. The final chapter then tells you that if you are not naturally a confident rider that you will continually have to use these (some are a bit odd) techniques throughout your riding career, and that you will always run across some riding scenarios that will cause you to regress in "Fear Free Riding". The other piece of advice that I found disappointing was, basically, that you should never ride a horse that isn't completely safe, respectful and responsive, which is great advice, but most riders never have any fear issues around that kind of horse anyway. As a trainer I was looking for techniques that can keep me calm and really focused when my horse is struggling with something.

Overall I felt this book was supportive. I was already trying imagery off horse and finding it helpful but I didn't agree with trying imagery on the horse as she suggested. To me, taking yourself out of the present moment to focus on how you want the moment to be, INCREASES the chance you'll have an accident because you're reaction time has been slowed. For new advice, I found the recommendation to start writing in a notebook most helpful. While I've discussed how I was feeling with others, writing things down brought more issues into clarity for me and helped me to evaluate and move forward with more understanding. I would recommend this book but wouldn't blindly follow all the advice.

This book was very different than any I had read before. It made a lot of sense and had exercises that were easy to understand and to implement. I found the section dealing with imagined "what if" section especially helpful as I have always imagined problems that never come to fruition. Just asking my self how likely this is to happen has made me realize I have spent too much time worrying about things that never actually happen. It definitely helped me reduce my anxiety and think instead of getting tense.

GREAT book. Helped me get over my anxiety about re-entering the equestrian world after a four-year hiatus. Highly recommend: I will be referring to this book again and again.
