L'autore

Carol "Pixie" Brearley was born in Florida, raised in Brooklyn/Queens NY, and moved to upstate NY in her early teens where she now resides. A stay-at-home mother to three she chose family over career and does not regret a moment of it because it allowed her to bring The Dark Angel Trilogy to life.

5.0 su 5 stelle I can't wait for book #2! 22 aprile 2013
Di Steve Manke - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Formato Kindle Acquisto verificato
A few years back, a series of books made an international splash. The central thread of the trilogy was a young woman who was mistreated and abused in a horrific fashion. And throughout the three book series, the central character ultimately had her revenge. That series was ultimately known as the Millennium Trilogy and was written by Stieg Larsson. Many know the series better by the title of the first book, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. It was an international smash hit and, at its core, it dealt with a woman who had been horribly wronged.

Fans of the Millennium Trilogy are likely to appreciate the visceral drama at the heart of Rise of the Dark Angel. Only where Stieg Larsson literally spent hundreds of pages slowly spinning his tale and taking lengthy side trips, Carol Brearley tells a tale that is much more on point while equally gritty and engaging. It's the story of Aingeal, a young woman living in New York City. The story opens strong and hits the reader hard as we experience how Aingeal is wronged first hand, through her eyes.

In many ways, this is one of the things that makes this story so powerful. It's told in the first person. The reader experiences everything through the character's eyes. The fear, the pain, the need to heal, and ultimately the thirst for revenge. The author, Carol Brearley, puts the reader there, front row for the roller coaster ride that is both Aingeal's pain and her road to recovery.

While I liken the tale to Larsson's Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, the parallels I see are strictly in theme and tone. Rise of the Dark Angel is a story absolutely unique. It stands entirely on its own. It's dark, it's gritty, and it's about the horrible experience of a character and how that twist of fate ultimately threatens to crush her. How she chooses to deal with what has happened will either lead to her future or her end.

What Larsson did at the slow pace of a writer planning something of epic scale, Brearley has accomplished at the much more gratifying pace of a thriller author. The story moves quickly and the plot charges forward, constantly focused on character and her circumstances. And since this is only book one of the trilogy, it absolutely leaves the reader wanting more...

5.0 su 5 stelle An Interesting Moral Dilema 11 aprile 2013
Di C. W. Lovatt - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Copertina flessibile Acquisto verificato
An interesting moral dilema. On the one hand you have a brutalized victim who (bless her soul) refuses to be a victim. But on the other hand we have a preying vigilante - a raptor who will forgive herself anything in the name of vengeance. So many times throughout the course of this book I found myself thinking, "No! No! Turn away from it all! There's a life out there just waiting for you! Don't throw it all away!" An all too human reaction, I suppose, from someone who has never experienced such trauma, to the all too human reaction of someone who has. Ms. Brearley was masterful at creating that rift and maintaining it throughout the story. Very well done indeed! And the ending was no slouch either!

5.0 su 5 stelle Gripping and a definate page turner 30 giugno 2013
Di Jen Antle - Pubblicato su Amazon.com

I am truly pleased I moved this book up my list of 'to reads'.

The author puts the reader into the story, we follow the main character in the beginning leading her normal everyday life, painting, headed to work serving at a bar near her home, and then she is abducted, attacked, tortured and left for dead... She should have died but was saved and spends a great deal of time in the hospital,
After her life changes and she finds strength she didn't know she had, and the Dark Angel is born... There's so much more but spoilers would not do the story any justice!

This is a fabulous debut novel and I'm currently in the process of reading book two and LOVING the next installment... Definately a book to check out.

5.0 su 5 stelle Even Angels Bleed 20 gennaio 2014
Di Lollie - Pubblicato su Amazon.com

Mrs. Brearley doesn't tell a story. She tells a truth. Some say what she's written is difficult to read, but it's only because it is so real. It's because she touches on subjects we still consider taboo. It's refreshing to read so much detail, even if the details are sometimes gruesome or heartbreaking. The truth is raw and ugly.

Rise of the Dark Angel is darkly honest story from the side of the victim. Except this angel isn't going to accept her status. She is going to fight back. She is going to overcome the oppression. I look forward to every book Brearley writes!
