Descrizione prodotto

George Randolph, the oldest brother and patriarch of the family, needs someone to wash, cook, and clean for the brothers on their Texas ranch. Rose Thornton accepts that job. She arrives at the homestead to find six men ranging in ages from six to twenty-four years old. The house looks like it hasn't been cleaned in years, the clothes practically stand up and beg to be washed, and everything in the kitchen is black with soot and grease. She soon discovers she's in the midst of a truly dysfunctional family. The brothers don't seem to like anybody, and that includes each other. They don't much like Rose, either. Once they learn her father was an officer in the Union Army, they vote to send her back to town.

George Randolph was an officer in the Confederate army. He feels responsible for his family, but wants to rejoin the army, the only time when his life was ordered and predictable. Rose sets out to convince George that he's not only a father figure to his brothers, he really wants a family of his own. With her. At the same time seeks ways to repair the fragile bonds that hold this family together.

Leigh Greenwood's Seven Brides Series captivated me with 'Rose', the first book of the series. I am an avid Western Historical Fiction reader, so the concept of this series intriged me. Boy did Leigh Greenwood deliver! Rose, is hired as a cook/housekeeper to the seven rough, rowdy and untamed Randolph brothers. The two oldest brothers have just returned to their Texas cattle ranch after the end of the Civil War to find that their father has died in the war, their mother died of grief, and their brother Madison has left the four youngest brothers to fend for themselves. The brothers are a hot mess! The oldest brother George, thinks he is hiring a housekeeper to clean it up, but he finds that only the love and care of this brave woman named Rose can save them and keep them together. In the process, George and Rose find everlasting love in each other.

I enjoyed the story of George and Rose. I also liked the family but wish there was a little bit more romance.

I really enjoyed this book and I am glad I finally bought it. I skipped it several times because it made me think it was going to be some imitation remake of my favorite movie Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. While the beginning of the book did have some very similar scenes ~ like the flipping the table over ~ but the rest of the book stands on its own.
I only gave it 4 stars because if I had one complaint it was that the man vs. self conflict with the hero was very hard for me to rationalize. I just don't see how he saw any of his father in himself. And after the drawn out inner turmoil throughout the entire book, and all of the problems it created for Rose and George it just seemed unnatural how he suddenly got over everything. I really just think there should have been more revelation about the specific things his father did to make them hate him earlier in the book. It would have made the conflict a little more believable.
In the end though I really enjoyed this book and how real everything else seemed. The love story felt natural and like an honest progression not like it all happened overnight. Well worth the time and money. Now I'm off to read Fern.
One last compliant not on this book but the series. Two of the seven books are missing on kindle. Why on Earth would they do that now I'm going to miss Monty and Jeffs story or I'm going to have to "gasp" read an paper book again.

Written by one of the most talented writers of Western stories. This is the third time I have read this story by this most respected writer and I loved it as much or more than the first time. It gives a look into Texas after the Civil war and the reconstruction I as someone from Germany and Hitler's time knew nothing about and despising anything to do with war knew I never would investigate further. It is written with sensitivity and understanding of family dynamics and love. It is the first book in the extensive saga of the Randolph family Rose and George being the foundation of how the lives and loves of his six brothers would turn out. It's also a book of forgiveness and redemption and in many ways teaches us all something. It won't be the last time I read this series it will enrich you ad well.
