2016 Nebula Award finalist for Best Novella

The Minerva Sierra Challenge is a grueling spectacle, the cyborg's Tour de France. Rich thrill-seekers with corporate sponsorships, extensive support teams, and top-of-the-line exoskeletal and internal augmentations pit themselves against the elements in a day-long race across the Sierra Nevada.

Marmeg Guinto doesn’t have funding, and she doesn’t have support. She cobbled her gear together from parts she found in rich people’s garbage and spent the money her mother wanted her to use for nursing school to enter the race. But the Minerva Challenge is the only chance she has at a better life for herself and her younger brothers, and she’s ready to risk it all.

Runtime is S. B. Divya's exciting science fiction debut.

“A thrilling romp through a gleaming cybernetic future that's neither dystopia nor utopia, but embedded in our reality— I wish more science fiction were as exciting and relevant as Runtime.” — Ken Liu, Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy Award winner and author of The Grace of Kings

"S. B. Divya is a new light on the science fiction scene, a writer with the promise and talent to become one of our genre's stars. Have a read; she's a wonderful storyteller." — Catherine Asaro, Nebula Award winning author.

5.0 su 5 stelle Outstanding world building and a compelling heroine 5 giugno 2017

So this is a weird review to write because I know the author. And when you read something written by someone you know it's always kind of fraught because it's excruciatingly embarrassing to like a person and dislike their work. Luckily I don't have to worry about that with Runtime because it is truly wonderful. Marmeg is a flawed but honorable heroine, reminiscent of Katniss Everdeen but without the Mary Sueism that ultimately weakens The Hunger Games. Marmeg inhabits a near-future dystopian Los Angeles where those who can afford to alter their bodies with technology lives dazzling lives while the Nats--those too poor to equip their bodies with chips and to erase their genders with surgery--are doomed to poverty, violence and despair. It's a natural extension of our present day world where those with the education and access to information technology live privileged and sheltered lives compared with those condemned to minimum wage service jobs. While the outlines of the dystopian world and Marmeg's challenges bring to mind other novels, the complexity of the characters and the moral choices they face set this world apart. Another stellar aspect of the novel is the dialogue, in which Marmeg and her friends speak a rhytmic technology based pidgin that is incomprehensible to the moot elites. My understanding is that a longer sequel is planned for Runtime and I can't wait to read it. Highly recommended.

5.0 su 5 stelle The story was excellent, and for all it's a novella 23 maggio 2016
Di Leila Belhadjali - Pubblicato su

The story was excellent, and for all it's a novella, the main character especially was well described. You never really feel sorry for the Marmeg because you know she's going to get back up and do what she needs to do, her resilience was one of the best parts of the book, and felt very real to me. She was a kick ass character with a race to win! The race part was exciting and the description of the Sierras in winter and the main character's reaction too them was very real.

Where this book shone? In the world building. S.B. Divya created a world that reflects some of the deeper cultural divides we currently face, and treats them lightly but with assurance. She touches on ethics, and on the personal cost of ethics, especially for someone who has everything to lose by acting in an ethical manner. This world is a world of bioengineering, and profound social prejudice, of cybernetics and new gender identity. You get a strong sense of this world through the story itself, not through long paragraphs explaining this that, and something more, so the world building is seamless, part of the story, but never THE story.

I really liked the book, and I hope Marmeg's story isn't over yet! However, even if it is, I do hope that the author will revisit this world and set other stories there. It seems like an interesting place, and I'd like to know more about it.

4.0 su 5 stelle An excellent debut for Divya 24 maggio 2016

An excellent debut for Divya, I can't wait for more.

The world building here is top notch. It's impressive how much was fit into this novella. The story shows us a fascinating society, with classical values struggling to integrate cybernetically enhanced, surgically neutered beings

The main character is a genius at programming cybernetic implants, but is prevented from pursuing a career due to lack of funds, and a legislative framework that keeps the poor poor. Her only chance at a better life is competing in an race, using gear salvaged from dumpsters, against corporate sponsored athletes. Along the way we get a good look at how every level of society operates, from the survivalist to the corporate scion.

The only real downside is that the story focused more on society than on the race itself. This is a choice necessitated by the length of the novella, but I wanted more!

I really recommend this story, absolutely worth it!
3.0 su 5 stelle A world of Cyborgs. 23 marzo 2017
Di Easy Reader - Pubblicato su

This story is set in an interesting future in which a human's social status, legal status and sexual identity are mostly determined by the embeds,
cybernetic additions, they can afford or build themselves. The heroine is a low status would be programmer/ athletic almost a cyberpunk.
She is street wise, but with believable ethics and bouts of depression. One weak point in the story is the it seems most people are rather careless about protecting the programming in their embeds.
I am rather surprised the book was not listed as YA since it concentrates on teenage anguish and has only a taste of violence and no overt sex, simply suggestions of how the new cyborgs do, or don't perform
5.0 su 5 stelle Well-Crafted and Satisfying 1 giugno 2017
Di C. Rose - Pubblicato su

The main character is engaging and sympathetic, the world is so smartly drawn for us, with polarizations oriented not towards 'left' and 'right' but closer to 'future' and 'past.' To me, the text echoed Jack London in its love for the natural world, attention to detail, urgent actions pushing the reader through that landscape. We meet some other characters, but in the end it is the main character's grit, and her moral choices, that win through. When the true ending finally arrives, it feels genuine to readers, and richly deserved to the protagonist. We can only hope for more, and more detailed, visits to this well-crafted and satisfying world.
