Knowledge is power…

While exploring the unused sections of the Ancient city of Atlantis, Major John Sheppard and Dr. Rodney McKay stumble on a recording device that reveals a mysterious new Stargate address. Believing that the address may lead them to a vast repository of Ancient knowledge, the team embarks on a mission to this uncharted world.

There they discover a ruined city, full of whispered secrets and dark shadows. As tempers fray and trust breaks down, the team uncovers the truth at the heart of the city. A truth that spells their destruction.

With half their people compromised, it falls to Major John Sheppard and Dr. Rodney McKay to risk everything in a deadly game of bluff with the enemy. To fail would mean the fall of Atlantis itself – and, for Sheppard, the annihilation of his very humanity…

The spiral design in the center of the chamber floor was moving, becoming three-dimensional as the little metal tiles forming it shifted fluidly. The whole floor was still vibrating, making the glass and metal debris jump and dance. Something groaned again below their feet, and the spiral began to sink into the floor.

Standing at John’s elbow, McKay glared at Kavanagh, his mouth twisted in annoyance. “What did you do?”

John wasn’t thrilled either. “Some warning would have been nice, Doctor.”

Teyla and Ford watched the spiral uneasily, Kolesnikova a few steps behind them. Kavanagh shook his head, his eyes still on the metal sinking into the floor, his gaze rapt. “I wasn’t sure it was really here, if the power source was still active. If I was...imagining it...”

The groaning rumble of metal parts undisturbed for ages was growing louder, and John wasn’t sure he had heard right. “What?” he said, having to raise his voice over the din. “Why did you think you were imagining it?”

“I was imagining what?” Distracted, Rodney stepped sideways, moving along the edge of the shaft, craning his neck to watch the spiral’s progress.

“I wasn’t talking to you,” John shouted back, “I was—”

“Wait.” Rodney straightened up suddenly, looking at John. “It occurs to me that something may come out of here that could kill us.”

John swore and yelled, “Fall back, now!”

Excellent story. One that would have been difficult to film. The characters are true to how I saw them in the series. But goes to new places. Don't want to say anything about the storyline, no spoilers. But if you watched the series I think you will enjoy this and it is not depend on any other books.

This was the first (of many) SGA novels I read, and it set the bar really high. The characters are so accurate to their TV personas, and the story is intriguing. The situation is just the kind of thing the Atlantis crew would find themselves in in the show. The writer manages to move the story along easily, without any stilted or artificial explanatory dialogue, and the various clues to the mystery (and there is a lovely creepy mystery) are dropped really well - upon second reading it actually gets better, because you see things that you didn't notice the first time, they're so well incorporated into normal banter and character interactions. If you're looking for a good SGA novel, this one is excellent.

I had never watched Stargate Atlantis until just recently. I had joined amazon prime and it is a prime video, and I love science fiction and thought I'd give it a try. I absolutely LOVED IT! I watched all 5 seasons in just a few weeks. I decided to do a search and see if there were any novels on the series, and couldn't believe my luck when I realized that there was, as I love to read. This novel was great! I loved it. It felt just like watching an episode. I will not stop till I have purchased and read them all. I really hope the authors continue the books as they did with the Star Trek series. I LOVE Shepherd, McCay, Teylor and Ronin. One of the best Sci-Fi series I have ever seen. Please Authors, do not let the adventure die!

5.0 su 5 stelle A pleasant surprise and worth every penny 24 dicembre 2010

I'd like to start out by saying this is probably the best of the Atlantis books (I own all but two), even though it's noticeably the shortest. Normally, I go into detail about the events and plot of the book for the review, but considering how good Reliquary is when compared to the other books, I would hate to spoil it for someone.

After reading it twice, I can say that the fact this book is the shortest is because Martha Wells keeps the story moving along at a pace reasonably consistent with the actual show. Reliquary contains none of the reams of extraneous, inconsequential detail that are so common in the other Atlantis books (even the decent ones) but explains the plot and setting well.

I found the premise was plausible and well-executed within the boundaries of the show's universe. The plot is consistent across chapters, usually changing locations only when necessary and generally to follow the characters as they move. Since there are only two locations and things follow logically from each other, keeping track of events is not difficult. My Atlantis books end up terribly dog-eared from having to flip back and forth, however the corners of this one are still flat.

Most importantly, the characterization was consistent with the show itself. The dialogue, description, and interaction fit quite nicely with Season 1 and the author makes use of nearly the entire cast without stretching too much or placing people in situations where they shouldn't be. Characters were obviously written by someone who had watched the show and for people who have watched the show. Much of the book's dialogue was of such a caliber that it could have come from the show's own writers and could be read by the actors without difficulty.

While Season 2's "Conversion" did touch on the same overall premise of infection and transformation, the specifics of the book are original and the writing is good enough to make it an enjoyable read. Reliquary doesn't feel like a retread. Instead, I felt like I was reading a novelization of a non-arc episode that would have made for good watching. Unlike most of the other SGA novels, I am quite careful about who I lend this one out to. Overall, I was impressed and it's a shame she hasn't written more Atlantis books after Entanglement.
