Sinossi

Seventeen-year-old Groundling, Fennel, is Sightless. She's never been able to see her lush forest home, but she knows its secrets. She knows how the shadows shift when she passes under a canopy of trees. She knows how to hide in the cool, damp caves when the Scourge comes. She knows how devious and arrogant the Groundlings' tree-dwelling neighbors, the Lofties, can be. And she's always known this day would come—the day she faces the Scourge alone.

A tale of star-crossed lovers, strange creatures, and secretive, feuding factions, The Scourge introduces readers to a rich and exciting new world where nothing is as it seems.

4.0 su 5 stelle A Surprising and Refreshing Read of a Cliched Topic 5 gennaio 2016
Di Savannah - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Copertina flessibile Acquisto verificato
Fennel lives in a world run by fear of the scourge: savage people who eat the flesh of others. Fennel’s people are the groundlings, who call the earth their home and fear plagues them. The lofties live in the trees, protected from the flesh eaters. Both sides don’t get along, but they depend on one another. Fennel’s blindness is a gift that protects her from the scourge and that forces her to have the job of water-bearer, the sole individual responsible for keeping both the groundlings and the lofties hydrated during the long days the scourge ravages the land.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Going into it, I knew it was post-apocalyptic, but I didn’t quite realized it was a zombie novel, but that didn’t bother me at all. The way A.G. Henley approaches this cliched topic is so fresh and new that I really wanted to know more. I really liked the concepts in this world and found myself wrapped up in this book.

As a character, I enjoyed Fennel. She wasn’t perfect, but she learned to be strong. I have never read a book from a blind person’s perspective before and I really loved it. Having a family member that is blind, I felt like I could relate to this book and Fenn more. The only problem I had with Fennel’s blindness is that it wasn’t made clear that she could see changes in the lighting around her. From the beginning of the book, I thought she was totally blind and it really irritated me that she would talk about it getting darker or lighter. Once I realized she wasn’t one hundred percent blind, I finally stopped feeling like A.G. Henley was making mistakes in her writing.

Peree was a great guy and I really rooted for him and Fenn. I did find him a bit clingy at some parts in the book, but later his behavior makes more sense when the reader realizes Peree has watched Fenn for years (not in a creepy way). I really loved finding out his back-story and seeing some later events unfold that really challenge him.

I really loved the twists and turns of this book. So many times, A.G. Henley threw in things that completely twisted the story into a different direction and it was a very fun ride. The ending was very satisfying and even though this is part of a series, there luckily wasn’t a cliffhanger ending like so many series have. Overall, I really enjoyed this book.

From the very beginning SCOURGE had me enthralled. I could not stop reading! For about 70% of the book...

What I loved:
-Fenn is a great character, and being blind meant that the author had to really step up on other sense descriptions. Done with perfection!
-The tribal communities theme was well developed. I liked two tribes that begrudgingly work together but remain separate. It is true to human form.
-Fenn's growth over the story. I felt as though I really got a good grasp of how Fenn was changing and becoming stronger.
-Adventure! As Fenn embarks on her adventure I found myself highly tied to her success.

What I didn't love so much:
-Peree felt a bit stuccato to me. He begins as this silent massive presence, but in an instant is open and warm and loving. It was almost like his introduction was a completely separate character from the one Fenn has as a keeper. I think I liked the strong silent version more than the one he became.
-The attraction and relationship between Fenn and Peree definitely has me rooting for them, however, it doesn't feel like there is anything keeping them apart through most of the book so I don't understand why it takes them so long.
-I don't want to include spoilers but I really started to lose my interest when some of the bigger facts about the Scourge are revealed. I almost felt like the explaination I got was...well kind of silly. After about 70% of the book I started to lose interest in the plot line...though not in the characters I must admit. I just don't see where the big reveal was going.

All in all, I would give it 3.5 stars. I think this is a matter of personal preference. I recommend reading it. You may not have the same instant detachment I did.

A.G. Henley brings us an extraordinary story of love, adventure, and tragedy. A journey of two people, from two different worlds that are suppose hate each other come together in a time of need. They have a great task, to help their people to survive while protecting them from the scourge.

This is a great and unique story. I find so many stories now that seem just like others I’ve read. Henley however gives us a fresh new story to fall in love with. There are surprises with many twist and turns. I had a hard time putting it down. Way to go A.G. Henley this story is spectacular. I would recommend to story to anyone looking for a fresh new prospective. I would also recommend reading book 2, The Defiance.

Review of the Scourge

Rating: 5 Stars
[...]

This story blew me away and not just the amazing plot, No. It was the main character that kept me turning pages and feeling amazed at every brave action she conquers.

Fennel is born blind so the majority of the story is told through touch and smell and what others describe around her. In her world her blindness is a blessing for the people who fear the scourge. The scourge are zombie like, and would tear any person apart turning them into one of their own. Only one type of person is exempt – the blind. The scourge can’t touch the blind so they become a person highly dependent on in the village when the scourge arrives.

Fennel is the water bearer at times when the village is in hiding. As a groundling Fennel needs someone to watch over from above, people who live in the trees are known as Lofties and Fennel’s loftie is Peree.  loved him.

The world building was well done and the inventive way of separating the clans due to colour gave a more daunting tone to this fantasy tale.

Fennel was one of the most kind and bravest people to read. Peree who watches her from the trees was interesting and an unexpected friendship blossoms between these two. The relationship is patient, kind and gentle. Bear is another love interest for Fennel but I much preferred Peree.

The basis of the Scourge and what Fennel and Peree thought about their world comes crashing down when they go in search of secret waters within the caves. Some revelations had me gasping but one about Fennel filled me with rage and I must admit I shed some tears.

This is the first book I have read where the heroine is blind and what a story it is. This was a well-crafted , imaginative and gripping tale of bravery love and a lesson lay within the story that us as humans give such power to lies that soon they becomes very real.

Wow. The author (A.G. Henley) has done an incredible job creating this book. I found The Scourge through the Amazon Kindle Deals, and it was free. I gave The Scourge a shot, and I surely made the right choice. The main character is named Fenn, and she is blind. She is a Groundling, part of a tribe who live on the ground. The Lofties, are people who live up in the trees. The Scourge are people-like creatures who come and basically eat anything living. Apparently, anyone blind is not harmed by the Scourge. When the Scourge arrives, it is Fenn's job to receive water from the lake, and take it back for the Groundlings and Lofties, who are in hiding. It is a brilliant story, and a great read. It was a little fast paced, and sometimes I had to go back and re-read a part because I had missed something. Most of the characters are likable, and I really didn't dislike any of the characters. I will most definitely read the second book in the series. If you like post-apocalyptic type stories, this is what you want. The only major twist is that the main character is blind, making it a unique read!
