5.0 su 5 stelle Thanks for the memories, Bob! 10 giugno 2016
Di Rolland W. Amos - Pubblicato su Amazon.com

This book tells us lots about Bob that we didn't know - good and bad. For example, he was cheap to a fault - even when he was worth $500 million. He eventually could afford anything, so he didn't pass much up - especially, women. He was ruthless to a fault when it came to firing people - even long-time, loyal employees. He obsessed about his legacy. His respect and loyalty to American GIs was real. He may have slept with more women than Errol Flynn, Chico Marx and Bing Crosby combined. He raised more money for charity than any other living American of his time. He was a land baron, friend of presidents, kings and queens, prime ministers and 5-star generals - and - according to Guinness Book of Records - the most decorated civilian of all time. He has 4 stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Toward the end of his life he dyed his hair red and looked like Bozo the Clown - a very old Bozo. He didn't age gracefully. His ego and greed lasted right up to the end. He refused to use his hearing aid and he couldn't see to read his cue cards. Bottom line: he was an A-hole, but he was also enormously successful as an entertainer and a business man. According to one writer: if Bob had a chance to live his life over again, it would be impossible. He wouldn't have enough time. I'm 84 and I found it sad to read about Bob's eventual demise - since my own lies just around the corner. Rolland W. Amos, Severn MD

There is no argument that the guy('Bob' Hope) was talented, but driven, opportunistic and amoral; the affable wisecracker routine was always a transparent façade. The book was well written and drew a balanced and, probably pretty accurate picture, of a complicated persona. The book also mined the intersecting histories of the radio, TV and movie businesses and the people who built their careers and considerable fortunes by adapting to the changing landscapes; it was fascinating reading--as well as juicy.

The un-public side of a much-loved American funny man. Perhaps more eyebrow-raising now vs. when this book was published. Groucho's son does a wonderful job revealing many details of Bob Hope's life.
