In the last days of World War II, German forces are sent to occupy the Italian hill town, Santa Vittoria, and claim its great treasure: one million bottles of the Santa Vittoria wine that is its lifeblood. The clownish mayor, Bombolini, matches wits with the urbane German captain, Von Prum, as the town unites -- aristocrats and peasants, old enemies and young lovers -- to deceive the Germans and save its wine. Where the wine disappears to is the secret of Santa Vittoria that Robert Crichton brings to life with wit, heart, and suspense in his masterpiece of classic storytelling. First published in 1966, The Secret of Santa Vittoria was on the New York Times bestseller list for 50 weeks -- 18 weeks as #1 -- and became an international bestseller.

This Story is one from World War ll, even though its written in novel form is said to be of an actual happening.
With the senseless loss of intelligent human life that occurred during world war ll, And the depressing after effect, this story takes on a different
spin of humor and ingenuity, taking place in a small italian town with its people just trying to survive unscathed they go to great lengths to protect their wine from being stolen from A troop of germans.

It was a gift, so I didn't see its condition, but; was glad it arrived before christmas and the recipients were delighted with their gift.

As so many others have written, this novel is simply wonderful. There are so many classic scenes, so many memorable moments. It is filled with humor and suspense. One feels one has been exposed to the gamut of life's more extreme experiences (including atrocities). There is also a host of vivid characters, but above all is the character of Bombolini. Yes, the book probably plays on stereotypes -- Italian villagers, German Nazis, men and women -- and how much of this is wisdom or true-to-life, and how much balderdash, I have no idea. But without a doubt it is a gripping narrative, a long and satisfying read.

Let me just note one thing that I wonder if anybody else has caught: The (sometime) narrator is introduced to us near the beginning of the book in a completely unexpected and shocking way. Did anyone else notice the similarity to, of all things, the movie Dr. Strangelove? It seems to me too close to be mere coincidence. And since the latter came out two years before Santa Vittoria was published, I infer that Crichton "imported" it.

The book is better than the movies, and the movie is excellent. I actually read the book before I ever saw the movie, classic that it is, and read it over and over again. So did my father, whose hardback first edition I inherited. When his book finally fell to pieces, I was delighted to find another one offered by an Amazon seller - and this one a signed first edition!

The book came quickly and well-wrapped. I am delighted to have it on my shelf again. Thank you, Amazon seller!
