Humor Book of the Year finalist!

This ain't no galley tour.

In his bestselling debut tell-all Cruise Confidential, cruise ship insider Brian David Bruns revealed why he was the only American in Carnival Cruise Lines history to complete a full eight-month contract in their restaurants. Returning with his award-winning wit and delightfully candid narrative voice, Brian brings us the first and only expose of art auctioneering on the mighty liners, where the tenet of "what happens at sea, stays at sea" has always been observed - until now.

˃˃˃ Cruise Confidential, Book 2:

Ship for Brains takes on cruise ship art auctioneers, a society brimming with odd personalities drawn to the stress and isolation that invariably lead to alcohol and a Hell-may-care attitude. Willingly giving up home and family in favor of high-paced, crushing sales goals demanded while port-hopping from nation to nation, art auctioneers are undermined by the lash of tyrannical ship officers, unforgiving gallery managers, hyena-like trainers, and a skeptical public. The burn-out rate is phenomenal”"but when it works, you are king of the world.

Brian’s true-life struggle turns both harrowing and hilarious when goaded by the lecherous but mighty auctioneer Bill Shatner, and he must navigate sexy dancers and their all-to-intimate cliques, the slapstick schemes of his mentors, and the seduction of success, all while staying true to his girl and himself. We are transported from the Caribbean to the Pacific and Costa Rica to Transylvania as our likable guide vividly describes his many misadventures, triumphs, flirtations, and, above all, his amusing and astute insights into human nature.

˃˃˃ Midwest Book Review:

With a grand dose of humor and a good dose of memoir, Ship for Brains is a fine pick, not to be missed.

Brian David Bruns is a best-selling and award-winning author whose books have been lauded by the Travel Channel, Today Show, and USA Today, among other prestigious publications. Brian's Cruise Confidential book series—by the only American in the history of Carnival Cruise Lines to endure a full contract in the ships’ restaurants—earned his being featured in ABC’s 20/20 special edition, the aptly-named “Cruise Ship Confidential,” seen by 7.61 million viewers. When not writing Brian strives for adventure. He has traveled to 50 nations, biked the 500 miles across his native state of Iowa, bagged a bunch of America’s most prominent peaks, and run some decidedly off-the-wall marathons. His latest passion is for the mayhem of obstacle-filled mud runs. By far the best, however, is hiking with his wife of five years, Aurelia. They currently live in Las Vegas.

The author's first book contained a lot of information that a person might want to know if they were considering working on a cruise ship. This book offers less information and is more of an autobiography.

After working in the dining rooms aboard Carnival cruise ships, the author gets the opportunity to become an art auctioneer and make some serious money, though his real motivation is to be assigned to the same ship where his girlfriend works.

This book follows him through his auctioneer training, his work as an associate, and his first cruise as an auctioneer. It ends there though, leaving some basic questions unanswered. How long did he work as an auctioneer? Was he fired for not meeting the often unrealistic sales quotas, or did he quit due to the stress? Was he eventually reunited with his girlfriend? A short epilogue could have wrapped up everything nicely.

We learned from his first book that working on a cruise ship is not all fun and games, but as a concessionaire and member of the staff he was assigned better living quarters, had more time off, and earned much better pay. Since he used to work in the dining rooms for long hours, I expected him to show some sympathy for those crew members. I also expected to hear of the contempt that lower paid crew members might have for him and other staff. The social dynamics on board could have been a great addition to the story but instead there were only a few hints of these things.

The book mostly contains tales of his misadventures on shore with his often heavy drinking, arrogant, and womanizing coworkers. While these made for entertaining reading at times, most wreaked of heavy embellishment.

I read this book shortly before going on a cruise and hoped to gain a little insight to the art auctions on board. While I can't expect him to give up all the trade secrets, by the end of the book I hadn't learned much. Well, maybe I learned something.

If you are willing to work long hours for low pay, then working on a cruise ship might be right for you. Fringe benefits include cheap drinks in the crew bar, and endless opportunities for casual intimate encounters with your coworkers. If you want to remain faithful to your girlfriend who works on another ship and you assume is staying faithful to you, I question your sanity. Oh wait, all of that was covered in the first book so save your money. If you just have to read this one, borrow it from a library or a friend.

This is part two of Brian David Bruns' series in Cruise Confidential. In this book he tells his story of the grueling process to become a Sundance Auctioneer for the Cruise Lines. The training process is very stressful and once he finally gets assigned to a ship, his story continues to be anything but smooth sailing. The author has a way of telling his story in a colorful and engaging manner. The behind the scenes look at the cruises and the politics that go on are very interesting, at times shocking. Overall, the book is well written, funny and just an interesting story. I enjoyed hearing his adventures when the ship would dock for the day, all over the world, as well as the interesting characters he meets along his journey.

Cruising is my choice of vacation, and so far we have only gone on Carnival. I started reading Mr. Bruns series due to a recommendation from a fellow cruiser, and I have not been disappointed. The first book was funny and offered a look into the galley and life as a common worker. This book tells the story of how Mr. Bruns moved into the art auction area of the ships. While I'm not sure I believe every story he gives, it is certainly an entertaining read. Even if it is not fully true, it is true enough (or at least it sounds it) to offer a "sneak peek" behind the scenes of where I usually only get to see as a guest. His style is very easy to follow and holds my attention, even though I am a slow reader and don't have a lot of spare time to dedicate to the book. Even if I was only reading in 2 minute chunks, I kept coming back every minute I got. My husband has also started reading the series, which marks his first non-fiction read since high school.

Liked the first book more than I expected, and more so with this one.
A fun read about a guy following woman to sea...and all the experiences that follow. BD Bruns has a fun writing style that keeps you engaged, makes you laugh out loud, and wonder what it would be like to have the guts to do what he did. I have a number of friends who have worked on ships and they all have some great stories but none that compare to this. The narrative and style read like a good friend is giving you a full account of his adventures at sea

This is one of the few books that I couldn't finish. It didn't feel like a real experience to me, and felt embellished to make what the author thought would be a better read. There were some things that were interesting, but unlike other books of the genre (and from Bruns himself), I'm not sure what's real and what's made up. That said, I have read Bruns other books and enjoyed them.
