FINDING A SPARK WHEN THE STAKES ARE HIGH
Rhonda Phelps is 52 years old and cautious about dating to find a potential soul-mate in the 21st century. The rules have changed since the romances of her youth. When she finds her way to the online dating sites, the drama begins. Her first experience is a hook-up, as she describes in the first chapter of A Shoebox House.
Rhonda tends to the tedious process of setting up a dating profile. Along her computerized journey she portrays the characters she encounters online, the dangers of online trolls and scammers, and the apathy inherent in the dating systems. She talks explicitly of the consequences mature women face with sex and shares an amusing story about a trip to an adult store.
What she desires is a long-term relationship filled with love and stability. Unexpectedly, Rhonda meets Gary on Plenty of Fish and they develop a rooted friendship. Then, she meets Lyle, a semi-retired professional, and sparks of passion ignite.
During Rhonda’s single years, she acquired cherished girlfriends and she probes them for advice to validate her newfound boyfriend. Confidences were exchanged while enjoying the outdoors surrounding Bozeman, Montana. With Lyle by her side, they were energized by the summer sun, combatting loneliness and embracing life.
As the summer progresses, Rhonda senses something is amiss about Lyle’s lifestyle. His secret closet and occasional peculiarities cause her uncertainty, and she begins to lose her grip on reality. Her stability fades with each passing day. After a difficult email exchange, Rhonda and Lyle begin to question the nature of their affair. Two days later – she is nudged near madness.
