l'obiettivo in sè è stupendo. purtroppo l'ho dovuto prima spedire due volte in assistenza, parzialmente a mie spese senza risolvere il problema, poi AMAZON mi ha cambiato esemplare senza battere ciglio. anzi prima me ne ha inviato uno, poi si è fatto rendere il primo, tutto a sue spese, con etichette pre stampate e tutto organizzatissimo. il secondo obiettivo ricevuto è perfetto, però... i difettati Sigma esistono davvero, io credevo fossero leggende metropolitane, poi è toccato proprio a me!

per la maggior parte delle foto che ho avuto modo di scattare l'obiettivo si comporta bene, specialmente in esterno e con buona illuminazione/contrasto ma in interno la messa a fuoco è davvero un grosso limite. dicono che il nuovo modello sia meglio...ma costa più del doppio... bisogna sapersi accontentare...

Obiettivo molto , ma molto solido sapevo già di acquistare un ottimo obiettivo ma avevo paura di non trovarmi per le mani proprio quelli con problemi di front/baci focus !!! Secondo voi ? Esatto mi è arrivato, scatto e subito me ne accorgo che c'è questo problema . Allora subito a spendere altri 59€ di anello per regolare questo auto focus . Cosa posso dire un bel obiettivo ma la casa Sigma dovrebbe controllare meglio , o tarare meglio gli obiettivi prima di metterli in vendita . Sono un pi insodisfato .

Arrivato in tempi record e ben confezionato, non ha deluso le aspettative. Messa a fuoco istantanea e sfuocato da paura. Ad 1.4 è parecchio difficile scattare perché bastano pochi millimetri di scostamento per andare fuori fuoco. Ci vuole un po' di pratica, da 2f in su diventa un gioco da ragazzi

Nikon un 50mm così non lo fa, paragonabile al 50mm f1/1,2 della canon.Velocità di messa a fuoco impressionante, a causa della velocità sulla Nikon d7000 va tarato AF/fine.A differenza degli obiettivi Nikon, funziona meglio l'autofocus con live-view anziché quello dal mirino reflex. Se soffrite la messa a fuoco non prendetelo, se invece vi piace cimentarvi con ob. che reagiscono diversamente dai nikon originali prendetelo.
Pro:bokeh,velocità messa a fuoco, luminosità dell'ob. filtro anteriore diametro 77 come il 70-200 2,8 della nikon. Flare e microcontrasto migliore del nikon 50mm f1,4.
Contro: messa a fuoco AF da metabolizzare, bokeh tipo buccia di cipolla non per perfezionisti(meglio il nikon, perfetto lo zeiss), NON TROPICALIZZATO OKKIO ALLA SABBIA, sto cercando delle guarnizioni da applicare, mentre il nikon g 50mm 1,4 è tropicalizzato, tutta un altra cosa.
Prodotto consigliato per ritratti e mezzibusti per nikon Dx (nikon D7000 in su), sconsigliato per 5x00 e per 3x00.

Haime ho acquistato e reso questo prodotto fofortunatamente da amazon(grazie di esistere).
L' obiettivo escluso il 50 1.2 canon è il migliore in circolazione nulla da dire, mi son deciso all' acquisto pur conscio dei problemi di front back focus che potevano esserci tanto ero certo di risolvere con la microregolazione della mia reflex, Appena arrivati entrambi gli obiettivi presentavano un problema di Front focus, al che mi adopero alla regolazione del fuoco e scopro con rammarico che pur riuscendo a regolarla quasi perfettamente ad un metro di distanza (distanza suggeritami dal tecnico sigma di Milano) noto che mettendo a fuoco a grandi distanze entrambe le lenti erano starate chiamando il centro assistenza sigma scopro che l' unica soluzione era spedire a loro obiettivo e macchine fotografica A MIE SPESE.
Fortunatamente amazon ha una politica fantastica ed ho reso il tutto.

Ho acquistato questo obiettivo per una Canon 70D.
Dopo alcune prove ho capito che soffriva di back focusing, quindi ho provato a mandarlo in assistenza Sigma per una calibratura.
Purtroppo la calibratura gratuita non e' disponibile per questo tipo di prodotto, poiche' pur essendo venduto tramite amazon italia, essendo parte del Marketplace occorre prima fare richiesta per validare la garanzia anche in Italia.
Purtroppo per questa richiesta occorre aspettare circa un mese e non avrei piu' potuto avviare il reso per la scadenza dei termini.
Non vi so dire quindi se la garanzia sarebbe stata valida per una calibrazione gratuita (il costo della calibrazione si aggira intorno agli 80 euro).
Prodotto restituito, meno male che il venditore e' stato eccellente e mi ha guidato in tutti i passaggi per la restituzione dell'articolo, compresa la spedizione a carico loro. Venditore A+

It is a wonderful lens that needs technique to get the most out of. I read all the negative reviews saying that this lens misses more times than hitting focus, however on my full frame 5D classic it is great. Now on the 70D it can be precarious at large apertures F1.4 to 1.8 but by 2 and upwards it is fine. Consider what a shallow depth of field you are working with at very large apertures and any slight movement can not the focus point out….Manual focus it, you would if it was a Zeiss lens? so the quality, well it is excellent glass there is a supreme quality to the images what is focused 'zings' out from the background. I will upload some examples from the 5D as this is really why I bought it but as a portrait lens on a 1.6x crop like the 70D it is a wonderful portrait lens. Get a copy of this lens from the Amazon Warehouse clearance as dissatisfied customers are returning them (fools). it is a top notch lens even if you have to manual focus and I see this as part of the learning curve.

Great optics & build, terrible AF

Sigma's 50mm offering is highly attractive: robust build, optically superb and offering a 77mm filter thread for compatibility with other quality lenses. It does however have the most terrible reputation for poor AF on Canon, particularly on the FF Canon bodies.

I chose to try one for my 5DII, ordering from Amazon because of their excellent return policy. The first copy front focused quite badly at short distances (< 2m) but rear focused at around 3m and beyond. In other words, there was no way to fix this using AFMA.

I applied for a replacement, but the second copy exhibited much the same behavior, rendering it just about unusable for regular use.

I'm now sending that copy back too, and I've asked for a refund. When the refund goes through I'll get the Canon 50mm f1.4 instead. It may be inferior in a number of ways, but overall I think it'll be a lot less hassle than the Sigma.

Here's a quote from Roger Cicala of LensRentals in the States concerning the Sigma 50mm:

"On full frame cameras and to a slight extent on crop frame cameras, the lens exhibits what I will term “schizophrenic autofocus”; i.e. when closer than 5 feet, it will front focus, further than 20 feet it will backfocus. This is not a calibration issue, it’s just how it is."

Unusable AF for both photo & video

Tested it on Canon 6D and 70D, only wide open, as this is why you buy it, right? Focusing is terrible, couldn't get proper results, sometimes at F1.4 - F2 it focuses ok, sometimes you can't get sharp image from 10 attempts. So, I guess, there are AF issues in some distances, as I got some nice face shots when AF, but couldn't get any sharp image for full body shot. Also, face shot was possible only with +15 AF adjustment on 6D, without AF adjustment 0% of images were in focus. As some said here before, it focuses randomly, and this is why you can't rely on this lens.

When shooting video on 70D, it also struggles to focus nicely, it is like tik-tik-tik, stepping not running smoothly like HSM lens should be. Experienced that for first time, as non of my lens in my collection does it like this, all are smooth and nice, 70D focuses very well on video, but not with this lens.

I also found that there are lots of CA issues with this lens, high contrast areas, it does better than some older design Canon EF lenses, but it is out of competition when compared to EF 70-200 F2.8 L IS II USM, or even cheap EF 40mm F2.8 STM. But real problems with CA I found only indoors, black item on white background, almost no problems outside, my 24-105 F4 L IS USM showed a way more problems outside, for example, sholder or hand in high contrast area, with Sigma were no any CA, while 24-105 showed a lot of CA in these areas. Ok, it is not as important as AF, as you can fix it in Lightroom.

I liked the build of this lens, it is nice and solid. It also comes with lens pouch and hood out of the box. Also it is 77mm filter diameter which is nice as I have most of my filters in that size.

And, when used in manual focus, it produced really nice images, loved that bokeh and colours, this is why I'll try ART lens now, hope there no AF issues anymore, and IQ will be even better.

Worst fears came true.

I got my first copy two weeks ago. Of Course just after arrived started testing lens as I've heard about focusing problem… and yes that was my case as well but I took that into account ordering Sigma over Canon 1.4 and knowing about issues it can have. 99% of my tests were done on 1.4 cause that's why you buy 1.4. Lens was front focusing from minimal focal distance to about 2-3m after that seems to be ok. As amazon run out of stock I've decided to send it to sigma for calibration. First impresion of Sigma support were great, lens came back to me with in a week "calibrated". Started testing again and … It was much better but not perfect still front focusing at the same range. On minimal focal distance 45cm / 17.7in I had .5 inch front focusing. You would think that it is not that much but on 1.4 you have only 1 inch narrow dof. My next step was to adjust that in camera micro adjustment. After doing so it was spot on until I've make a picture from over 3m away. Adjusting lens to focus correctly on minimal focal length made it over 20 inches back focusing on further focal distances. I've decided now to leave it as Sigma calibrated and have look how it is in real life situations as all tests I've done were done on tripod with ruler and printed calibration charts etc. on different distances and different angles. I've started shoting my 2yo daughter and my wife. With my child it was miss and hit as she can't be really still so it was hard to tell if she moved or I've moved a bit but keeping rate I would say was 2 out of 10 shoots at best. Moving to my wife… done some full body portraits and some headshots. On full body everything looked good but moving to half body and head and shoulders you start seeing this .5 inch focus difference. I had to focus somewhere between eyes and ears to get eyes in top sharpness if I would focus exactly on eye. tip of nose would be in this sweet spot. I've started to thinking that there may be something wrong with my 1 month old canon 6d because lens should be calibrated but there is nothing wrong with my 17-40L and 24-70 L Mk1 lenses tested same ways. But then I thought this is 1.4 lans other are f4 and 2.8 so I was still confused if that can be indicator. Until 2 days ago a got my self canon 100mm F2.8L macro IS. Tested as other lenses if need any adjusting and… spot on … 0 adjusting couldn't be better. And DoF on macro lens at 2.8 is even narrower than it is on 50mm 1.4 obviously. So I decided to try another copy of this lens. Amazon return is second to none… Received another one today but… lens couldn't get any worse… now I have 1.5-2 inches front focusing. I took maybe 20 shots and give up. Already applied for refund and I'm going for canon 50 1.4. rather have a bit of less sharpness on 1.4 which can be probably correct in PP and less creamy bokeh than missed focused picture witch can't be fixed.

Apart from focusing problems lens is lovely, feels nice and solid. Shame I can't have it but a I have no patience to keep sending back bad copies of lens and hoping that I will get good one eventually. If it would work correctly a would give it 5* because when I managed to get good focused picture it's beautiful. But I won't pay extra over canon lens to get manual or half manual lens if that would be a case I would go for Zeiss 50mm 1.4 planar T not for Sigma.

Although I have found Sigma to be good value, I have not really been very impressed with their lenses on digital cameras as they display too many aberrations such as colour fringing which was the case with this lens and the 85mm f1.4...... I have now stuck to Nikon lenses since changing back from Canon.
Can't fault the resolution, but needs better correction of aberrations.....Sigma have now bought out the Art range which are more expensive, but seem to promise better quality for digital......
