5.0 su 5 stelle The best guide specific to the northern route 12 settembre 2013
Di Patto - Pubblicato su Amazon.com

My interest in the Silk Road is pretty much centered on the terra cotta warriors, Tang sculpture and the cave paintings found along the northern route. So this guidebook speaks to my interests very well. It is very specific to this area.

There is lots of other information too - a summary of local history, fascinating stories about the foreigners who made off with precious scrolls and artwork, helpful sections on ethnic foods, and practical travel info on climate, accommodations, local customs, visas, immunizations and so forth. I really appreciated the brief introduction to Mandarin as well.

I would have liked more pictures of art. Also, I could have used more help understanding the progression of the route. Perhaps more maps would have been good.

But if you're contemplating a trip to the Silk Road, this book is the best guide there is. It was recommended to me by a frequent traveler to China who's an expert on the Silk Road cave paintings.

5.0 su 5 stelle Helpful background for Silk Road tour 24 novembre 2012

This book was the best I found for background information for a tour on the Silk Road that I took in 2009. I read it cover to cover (not something I do for every travel book) and referred to it regularly while traveling. It enriched my travels.
4.0 su 5 stelle A great companion for a traveler on the China leg of the silk road. 5 gennaio 2014

This book is well written and packed with stories, history and information. I took this book with me on a trip with my father from Urumqi to Shanghai and we both enjoyed reading it on the bus and train to learn more about our next destinations. The only bad things about this book is that it is biased to more wealthy travelers, and doesn't list many budget options as far as hotels and restaurants. I would recommend getting a second book such as Lonely Planet China as their accommodation and eating guide is superior.
5.0 su 5 stelle Perfect for the armchair traveler 16 giugno 2015

A most wonderful travel guide with beautifully photographed illustrations. Really takes you there while you sit reading in your armchair. I wouldn't count on the information regarding boarder crossings, accommodations, food and other practical travel information, as the book is a little bit dated, but for sheer travel phantasy enjoyment, this is top notch.
