'There is no description that could do this book justice. Slammed is a heart-wrenching, emotional, yet somehow humorous journey of two souls that are destined to be together, despite the factors that stand in their way. So much more than a romance, Slammed teaches lessons about love, life and the soul-deep moments in between. Not to mention the forbidden...it's oh, so good.' - Katie's Book Blog.

I have had this book for a while, but just hasn't gotten around to reading it. I'm not sure why, because I have never read a book by Colleen Hoover that I didn't love. So after finishing It Ends With Us and having a Colleen Hoover book hangover, I figured I would start on this book, the first in the series. And of course, I really enjoyed it. Once again, it wasn't what I expected at all and it always amazes me how the author can make you laugh out loud on one page and cry on the next. This book is well written and the characters are quite complex. I felt that we got to know Layken really well, along with her brother Kel. We also get to know Will and his younger brother Caulder and their backstory as well. We also get to watch as Layken makes her first best friend Eddie, after not really having time for these types of relationships in Texas. Eddie herself is a very vibrant, positive and unique character. There is so much that the synopsis leaves out in regards to both of their families and situations. Every time I read a book by Hoover, there's always that point where there is a plot twist or the revelation of a secret and it usually comes as a surprise to me. This book was no different.
I also liked that this book dealt with many different issues from love, friendships and relationships to family dynamics, grief and loss. I really enjoyed getting to know all of the characters and I enjoyed the fact that Layken does not talk or act like your typical 18-year-old high school senior; she seems to know what is and isn't important in life. Just like all of the author's books, I highly recommend you read this one. I immediately purchased the 2nd book in the series, Point of Retreat upon finishing Slammed. Thank goodness for Kindles; I prefer physical books and read those most of the time, but I will say an e-reader is convenient when you finish the 1st book in a series at 10pm and immediately want to start the 2nd! Happy reading!
How is it that I'm only at the 25% mark and I've already fallen in love AND had my heart broken? I love Lake and Will, I already love Kel and Caulder, and I like Eddie too. Bold and brazen, that one, but I'm curious about the heart tattoos ...
My thoughts at 50%:
I can't put this book down. It's past midnight and I have to be up at five. My eyes are so tired I can't see and everything is a blur. But I can't put this book down.
My thoughts at 75%:
"So you keep your ocean, I'll take the Lake." I don't know if I'm delirious from exhaustion (it's 1:45am) or if Colleen Hoover some kind of witch doctor ... But I can't stop crying. The mom and the balloons and the slam ... It's just ... I can't. I just can't.
My thoughts at 100%:
It's 2:30 in the morning and I have to get up at five. I have no idea how I'm going to function tomorrow, when I'm supposed to be editing my 8th book for the final time before publication on Tuesday. I have no idea how I'm going to be productive and be a calm and patient mother when I'll be running on less three hours of sleep. And I have no idea how long it's going to take me to recover from this book ... But I bet it's gonna be a while. Five stars. If I could, I'd give it fifty.

Layken and her little brother Kel have so much thrown at them in such a small amount of time. You get wrapped around them and want them protected form it all. Of course, they have their new next door neighbor to do just that! Will, what can be said? He was forced to grow up to fast and when that happens you often have some childish behaviors. They both have the best intentions but life can get in the way. Their journey was filled with ups and downs and I enjoyed each moment of their growth.
Of course I immediately downloaded Point of Retreat and started it. No way am I waiting on this one like I did Slammed!!!
This book was... fantastic. We meet Layken, her brother Kel and their mom as they move from their home in Texas after losing their father to a heart attack. Then we meet Will and his brother Caulder. Who live across the street from their new home. Kel and Caulder become best friends and Lake and Will become more. I went through the pain of discovering the boy I was falling in love with was my teacher and I could not be with him, discovering my mother has lung cancer and is dying and then realising that maybe all was not really as bad as it seems.
I really look forward to reading the next book in the series.
