Three centuries from now, mass migration from the tropics towards the Arctic Circle has squeezed resources and reshaped the geopolitical landscape. Food security is the highest priority for each of the northern hemisphere’s large city-states, foremost among them Demeter on Baffin Island, where the Ministry of Agriculture is militarized and willing to do anything to secure the food supply for its 31 million inhabitants. Freshly out of university, young botanist Vanessa Cruz joins the Ministry and embarks on a survey in a mountain forest in Honduras, beginning an adventure that spirals into a fight for survival in a hostile land.

5.0 su 5 stelle Setting aside the present day realities of climate change, how and what could humanity do if it came to pass? 20 gennaio 2016

Solanum does an admirable job of setting a story in a such a world. The story unfolds at a welcome pace, never lingering too long in one place but still spending enough time developing its characters. Characters who are quite relatable and easy to cheer on during the read.

Initially the length worried me the novel might be a flimsy attempt at grandstanding one way or the other over climate change but the author never lets his opinions take over the story. In fact I'm not entirely sure what his beliefs may be, the book just accepts its world for what it is. A bit more about the specific sciences presented throughout would be interesting, but that's a personal want and doesn't detract from the novel a bit.

All in all an engrossing page turner, not too science or politically focused. Certainly looking forward to exploring this world further.

5.0 su 5 stelle An Enjoyable Read 1 luglio 2016
Di Amazon Customer - Pubblicato su
This novel goes beyond simply being chalk full of engaging characters and offering a compelling storyline: I found it to be an incredibly original and accurate portrayal of dystopian society within a borderline post-apocalyptic world. I thoroughly enjoyed the author's tone throughout the book as it was clear that he is not only knowledgable on the topics of geopolitics, botany, and the sciences in general, but he was able to be informative on such topics without being biased nor too overwhelming. To top it all off, Russell's witty humor and wild plot line most certainly kept me on my toes.

With that, I must say Solanum is a great read for anyone looking for an action packed science fiction novel that is simultaneously thoughtful and suspenseful: In my opinion, it's the perfect combination of gutsiness and nerdiness, and I genuinely look forward to embarking on whatever adventure Russell has planned for his readers next!

5.0 su 5 stelle Great depiction of a futuristic world 3 luglio 2016

If you are looking for a feel good book that discusses eutopia in the future, this novel is not for you. The author hits on realistic issues that a futuristic world would have: violence (in the form of beating and shooting), sex trade (which is a steadily growing market in our current world), kidnapping for information (if anyone has watched the new we all know this happens).
The author does not shy away from discussing scientific values, but also hits on psychological changes that happen when the world is turned upside down due to global climate changes and famine. The characters are realistic and relatable to and the story is fantastic in the way it realistically depicts human emotions and changes in people's values as the world progresses into a different era. The only gripe I have is that I wish a few of the characters had a little more character development l.

1.0 su 5 stelle A book of no value 25 giugno 2016

When I started this book and was reading about the city in Canada in the 24th century I thought it was fantastic. I was already drafting a 5 star review in my head. The it all changed: 1. Shooting. 2. Stabbing. 3. Beatings. A woman being punched and called bitch. 4. One team member being taken and placed into the sex trade. 5. Then more and more shooting. I can get this on my evening news every night, why would I want to read it in a book. If this is the best the author can offer he should stop writing. What I think it can do very well is write about life in the future. I wish he would write a novel just on those lines and leave out all the violence.
As this novel stands it has no value and is not worth reading. I regret the time I spent reading it.
