Songs Of Surrender (4CD Super Deluxe Collector’s Edition - Limited Edition)

É il desiderio di ogni musicista riprendere i propri brani e ripensarli dopo un po’ di tempo, perché quando hai inciso la versione finale di una canzone dopo ore ed ore di prove ed ascolti e come se l’abbandonassi agli ascoltatori. La canzone muore non è più tua ed ad ogni ascolto o live vorresti cambiarla. Dylan docet! Quindi gli U2 o forse in particolare The Edge grazie alla pandemia di sono tolti questo sfizio, io da fan ma in particolare da musicista ho apprezzato l’operazione molto rischiosa, perché molti fan degli U2 si rivelano dei Talebani, considerando le canzoni dei loro idoli come sei dogma. Ci sono tanti momenti altissimi ad alcuni meno, ma il risultato è ottimo e molto coraggioso anche solo per aver reinventato Streets senza neanche una nota di chitarra. Sconsigliato a conservatori e Talebani della musica!

Premetto che si tratta di una raccolta di brani riletti in chiave acustica da Bono e soci. Perciò si tratta di qualcosa di completamente diverso dai loro soliti lavori, con uno stile più intimista e meno rock. Tuttavia, le canzoni, anche in versione acustica, sono bellissime e meritano di essere ascoltate attentamente.

La band definita "finita" e criticata da molti, ricordo che ha sempre fatto dei sold out dal vivo in tutti gli ultimi Tour in giro per il mondo e dal vivo sono sempre uno spettacolo!
Indubbiamente il periodo di Joshua tree e AB è stato il loro apice, ma personalmente ho apprezzato molto album come War (prima) e All that you can't (dopo). Come si suol dire de gustibus... ma personalmente apprezzo diverse versioni di questo Songs of surrender, su tutte Invisible, Bad e The Fly. Sicuramente resta un album al quale serve più di un ascolto per apprezzare nuovi arrangiamenti e le sfumature della voce di Bono, a parer mio molto in forma.

Fan trattati come mucche da mungere.

Mi sono voluto regalare questo disco, da storico fan degli U2, spendendo anche qualcosa in piu per questa deluxe, con la scusa che esce il giorno del mio compleanno.
Non farò molti giri di parole: e' con il cuore in mano che vi scrivo, per me è una stroncatura quasi completa. e per diversi motivi.
Pubblicizzato come "brani storici della band ripensati nel 2023", si tratta invece di un riarrangiamento acustico dei loro piu famosi brani, di cui gia avevamo avuto un assaggio nella deluxe edition di "songs of innocence". Come momento a se stante, o come aggiunta "deluxe" all'album aveva anche un che di affascinante. ma raccogliere in un album 40 brani riarrangiati in versione acustica, considerando le sonorità e le ritmiche cui la band ci aveva abituati in questi 40 e piu anni di carriera, fa davvero venire voglia di tagliarsi le vene dopo la prima facciata. E invece tocca ascoltarne altre 7.
Poi c'e' la questione prezzo: posso capire che in vinile costi di piu, ma proprio non si riesce a giustificare questa differenza tra la versione CD (sempre deluxe extended) da 36 euro, contro i 125 della versione vinile. Un vero affronto ai fan piu accaniti, desiderosi di mettere le mani su un oggetto sicuramente particolare, ma che vengono trattati alla stregua di mucche da mungere.
Ultimo ma non ultimo: 125 euro e nessun voucher per scaricare la versione digitale. nemmeno autorip di amazon. Forse nel tentativo di limitare la diffusione pirata, tentativo totalmente inutile visto che sui alcuni siti ho scoperto che era disponibile gia parecchi giorni.
Credo che finirò per restituirlo, ed eventualmente prendere la versione "standard" giusto per averlo insieme agli altri. ma soldi buttati comunque.

Canzoni bellissime rovinate da una nuova versione che non rende giustizia all'originale. Alcune sono diventate delle cantilene per prendere sonno, altre il karaoke del sabato sera. Sarà l'unico disco che non acquisterò fisicamente degli U2. Una delusione totale, che già dai primi singoli avevo intuito ma speravo che i restanti brani fossero diversi.

Ich habe mir die 4 CD Deluxe Ausgabe bestellt. Mit 37€ eine teure Anschaffung. Da es allerdings 4 CDs sind, ist der Preis eigentlich noch akzeptabel. Im Vorfeld wurde die Veröffentlichung schon von vielen Fans in den sozialen Medien zerrissen. Dort habe ich immer dafür plädiert erst zu urteilen, wenn alle Lieder zu hören sind. Leider muss ich den voreiligen Kritikern nun zustimmen. Langweilig, emotionslos, kraftlos, austauschbar sind nur einige Punkte. Von den 40 Aufnahmen gefallen mir höchstens 3 bis 4 Stück. Alle anderen kommen nicht an die Originale ran. Man könnte die Reihenfolge der Tracks beliebig verändern und der Hörer würde es vermutlich garnicht merken. Aus Rocksongs wurden langweilige Balladen.. Jedes ihrer vielen Alben hat mehr Qualität, wie diese Veröffentlichung. Vielleicht wäre ein MTV Unplugged die bessere Alternative gewesen. Da sind Akustikversionen normal. Aber die Livestimmung und zahlreiche Gastmusiker hätten es zu einem Erlebnis gemacht. So wirkt das ganze Teil lieblos und träge produziert. Ich möchte nicht 1 Stern geben, da ihr Lebenswerk und ein großer Teil ihrer Texte das nicht verdient haben. Aber meine Enttäuschung ist dennoch sehr groß, da ich 37€ versenkt habe. Ich hoffe das ist nicht das Ende ihrer Karriere und sie hauen nochmal ein richtig geiles Album auf den Markt. Nur mittelmäßige 3 Sterne ⭐️⭐️⭐️

So where do you start with this one...

This is a good solid offering from U2 but it isn't going to reignite your lust for U2 music like previous albums have done. This is a Simmering Fire as opposed to a Raging Inferno.

I love U2 and have been on every tour since Elevation in 2001 but this album is missed opportunity. This album would work if it was a live album, recorded with a studio audience, similar to Unplugged series from MTV back in the day. Listening to reimagined/unplugged songs with anecdotes inbetween would have been a better way for this album.

U2 have always been one of them rare bands that make you fall in love with their music when you hear the album for the first time and then they take it to another level when they play the songs live, making it even better again!

However, I have to mention Desire...total miss on this version...whilst The Edge has a great falsetto...when its in the right places...this version just sounds like a really bad BeeGees tribute act covering a U2 song. It's just awful...and it kills me to say that about a U2 song, especially The Edge...its usually such a rare treat to hear him as lead vocal...Peace On Earth on this album is an example of that...or Seconds on War/UABRS for a real amazing The Edge lead vocal experience!

In terms of the physical item, I'm still waiting for it to be delivered and this review is based on the Autorip free digital copy of the album. So, 3* for listening experience.

Music is the greatest thing this world offers. I have loved U2 since I was 13 and first bough and heard War. I love all genres and especially blues. I class the Manics Holy Bible, Hendrix’s Electric ladyland, anything by the Beatles or Stevie Ray Vaughan as works of art. For U2 to have the balls to release this four cd collection like this just shows the quality of their music. And the day I get buried Bad will be played as it’s the greatest sone ever written. Don’t listen to ignorant reviews of this collection just buy it. I wanted vinyl but money is tight but 30 quid for four cds is money very well spent. Well done and thank you U2.

Surprisingly Good!

I am a 1980’s/90’s U2 fan and didn’t have high expectations for this album due to my love of That U2 sound. I’ve always wondered what these tracks would sound like stripped back and acoustic. I have really enjoyed listening to these re-imagined reworked tracks. I had to give them time but I have been like that with all U2 albums. Bad, One, The Fly, Breaking Wave and Invisible are just so well crafted. But Peace on Earth, Electrical Storm, 11 O Clock Tick Tock, Little Things and 40 are getting more playback at the moment. I’m stilling looking forward to new albums and live performances but this album is a gem. Listen to the words and let the lyrics sink in. Marvel in the music, the new rythms and give it time!

If your looking for an unplugged album this is not it. This seems to be dividing fans so I thought I’d help those swithering one way or the other. First I love it, not what I was expecting but in a good way. For those that are saying they have nothing new to say, name another artist who has not just made acoustic versions of their back catalogue but completely rearrange those songs. Bon Jovi did it with This Left Feels Right and I loved that too. It’s not awful or dreadful as some are saying, some folk just don’t like change. I personally do when it’s done with this kinda care and attention. Stream this with an open mind if you are unsure. Approach it with no preconceived ideas and you like be might really enjoy it.
