In all fairness, I was provided an Advance Reader's Copy for review purposes. What I received had errors, gaps, and rather confusing segments that apparently were not finished. I would hope that these problems have been remedied for the final product, but I can only review what I had in my hands.
THE SPEAKEASY starts off with real promise. I loved the direction the book started taking and the initial characters were intriguing. As the story progressed, at points the story became disjointed and didn't make a lot of sense to me. Characters seemed to merge and were at times hard to tell one from the other.
The story line has some real powerhouse moments and then enters questionable realms of things that didn't seem to belong. There were parts of the book that seemed starkly realistic, while other parts struck me as weirdly surrealistic. Was this the author's intent? I'm not sure, but it did confuse me at times. Likewise there were times when I felt like I was reading a farcical comedy and then I wasn't sure if what I had read was really intended to be funny or not.
To put this review in proper perspective, please keep in mind that I am not the best reader in the world and some of these problems could be blamed on poor reading. There were definitely editing problems in the copy I had and if these have been resolved in the final published product then much of my review might be resolved to a more positive review.
Even if THE SPEAKEASY remained a 3 star book for me, I still hold Veronika Carnaby to be a 5 star writer. That if anything is enough for me to recommend this book. And if you haven't read Bohemia yet, be sure to check out that one.
I'm enchanted by how beautifully and descriptively the author writes. It reads very smoothly and I see it in my head unfolding scene by scene like a movie. The novel is set in such an interesting time period and I love the descriptions of New York back then. As for one of the main characters, Norman, I foresee Norman getting into something deep & troublesome. He seems like a desperate but good man at same time. The Speakeasy should be a very exciting read with intriguing characters - making for a good character study of the people- as well as for the great depressed city of NY during that period.
