Mao once called the Chinese "a blank sheet of paper", and the modernising that came with the Cultural Revolution treated cities much the same. But Mao's destructive impulses were as nothing compared to the liberalised policies of his recent successors. China has undergone urbanisation on a scale never seen before - much of it speculative, some of it a brazen display of power. In this incisive analysis by the acclaimed Sinologist Julia Lovell, we get inside the politics of architecture and city-making in China. There is a colourful cast, from the Western starchitects rushing into the land of opportunity, to political dissidents such as Ai Weiwei, to rebellious residents singing defiantly as the bulldozers advance. In this trenchant critique of urban policy, Lovell wonders what good all this thrusting ambition will have been if the property bubble bursts.

Ms. Lovell lights a path to additonal understanding of how modern China functions. This book is not really about the construction of architecture, but rather a partial blue print for the architecture of corruption. It is quite literally about the foundation of modern Chinese architecture; not the physical structure, but the power structure of one-party rule that causes apartment complexes and massive shopping malls to be designed and built, how and where it wants to suit its own ends. It's about how the Communist government can manipulate the financial markets of China and the world by a continuing economic stimulus program of building, building, building, while creating a huge demand for raw materials, cheap labor from the countryside, and cheap (basically confiscated) land, plus the need for more and more supporting infrastructure. What they have built may well be the biggest real estate and economic bubble the world has ever known.

For the past decade, the world has marveled at China's high double digit growth in GDP. Somehow it seemed that capitalism with Chinese characteristics had finally broken the bonds of the gravitational field of known economic theory. While many banks and corporations were a bit leery of such sterling successes, still, the year after year repetition of such high-flying economic success lulled investors to pour ever and ever more money and technological prowess into what everyone was calling the Chinese Economic Miracle. This kept fuelling the good times and sustained a self-fulfilling prophecy...for a while. But a willing suspension of disbelief is no substitute for taking a clear-eyed examination of the mechanisms of the conjurer's economic tricks. Looking at China's architecture and building industry is a good place to start.

"Splendidly Fantastic" is what the rulers in Beijing would have you believe about their "Chinese Economic Miracle". But even back in the Age of Miracles, the religious texts cautioned to build not on a foundation of sand.

It's more of an essay than an actual book. The conclusions part was very limited. I would prefer author to speculate more and present some of her subjective view on Chinese real estate market. Definitely worth reading, especially for the western architects working in China.
