2.0 su 5 stelle for my personal situation this book was not very helpful and didn't really propose anything new if you have any idea at all abou 27 giugno 2016

Having overcome a chronic illness which took seven years to properly diagnose and years to find the proper MD to treat me, I find books even by dr. Weil to be subpar in terms of dealing with severe chronic conditions. I think many folks in the alternative round take advantage of those searching for answers and when their answers and suggestions turn out to make them feel worse or do not help them they end up feeling helpless and hopeless there should be a section in these books to discuss alternative routes people can take if suggestions proposed in such books such as this one either make the person's worse or does that help them I also feel that this book is bad-mouthing traditional medicine and that is what ultimately Healed me

4.0 su 5 stelle Wonderful book (with a couple of exceptions) 1 dicembre 2014

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, written from the viewpoint of an open minded, conventionally trained allopathic physician. It was refreshing in how it brought together many concepts of holistic healing and I found myself greatly inspired. The only "negatives" are in the area of, understandably, nutrition. Here the information advocated by Dr. Weil is--according to the latest research--debatable, especially the part about fats. Current research shows that saturated fats are, by themselves, neutral vis-a-vis blood lipids, cholesterol levels, etc. Omega six fatty acids, conversely, are more likely to increase the likelihood of death from cardiovascular causes. Aside from the demonization of butter, Dr. Weil really brings together a lot of excellent information, with appropriate caveats (e.g. when to seek conventional care). A great book I recommended heartily to my friends and colleagues! For this simple dated view of saturated fats I deducted a star.

5.0 su 5 stelle It's a great teaching source. 18 settembre 2015

Some of the nutritional advice is a little bit outdated since the book was first published in 1995 but otherwise is just as I remembered it. I had loaned mine to a friend who subsequently moved without returning it. The techniques Dr.Weil advocates are not difficult and help the body to heal itself. However, nothing happens overnight so don't expect a magic sure. What I've always loved about Dr. Weil is that he uses a common sense approach and isn't adamant about not resorting to allopathic medicine - sometimes you just need an antibiotic, for instance! Anyway, if you want to take charge of your own health and be more comfortable despite any medical/psychological problems you are dealing with, this book is a great source for teaching you how to do that.

5.0 su 5 stelle Don't let the 2nd half undermine the 1st half! 5 giugno 2015

This book was incredibly inspiring and encouraging on my path to recovery from chronic pain.

It's worthy of 5 stars and I agree with 99% of what Dr. Weil says. I will offer one recommendation for reading this book: Don't let the 2nd half undermine what he says in the 1st half. The 2nd half gets very detailed about diet and herbs, and while I believe most of it has merit (I'm not so sure about the electromagnetic paranoia), the 1st half of this book is equally if not more important! I emphasize this because it's so easy for a reader to finish the book and say, "Ok, I need to do this, this, and this with my diet", all the while continuing on with a high-stress lifestyle and manner of thinking. Pay close attention to the stories of spontaneous healing in the first half, because it's always the change of THINKING and belief that catalyzed the patient's drastic recovery, and the diet part is supplemental.

I also highly recommend Dr. Sarno's book The Mindbody Prescription. I am currently reading The Mayo Clinic Guide to Stress-Free Living by Dr. Sood which is endorsed by Dr. Weil and has some merit as well.
5.0 su 5 stelle A classic 25 settembre 2013

I read this book 18 years ago (date of last copyright) and loved it. I bought this copy for $0.01 plus shipping for my co-worker because she is doing yoga and there are several sections on breath work in the book. Dr. Weil provides a lot of hope and reassurance. As a nurse of 29 years, I have seen a lot of damage done to patients using traditional medical and surgical approaches. Classical homeopathy has helped me more than anything over the years. I would always recommend primary prevention first (e.g. eating organic food, drinking purified water, exercising regularly [educate yourself on the differences between primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention as some "preventive" measures can be quite invasive and with risks]). Then I would recommend a natural approach unless the condition is emergent/life threatening. Dr. Weil covers many alternative and complementary approaches. Although they usually take time and patience, spontaneous healing can occur.
