5.0 su 5 stelle Fun Teen Science Fiction 9 gennaio 2014
Di Jada Ryker - Pubblicato su

Theopolis Logan, Theo to his friends, is an average thirteen-year-old boy. He loves online role playing games. His favorite sport is running. His best friend is Julie, whose nickname is Jules. His home is Brightside Farm, neither bright nor a working farm and tucked away in a rural, desolate area.

After his beloved grandfather dies and his annoying aunt moves in to take care of him, Theo is sad and angry at the same time. His aunt constantly harangues him about his lack of friends, his time spent at his computer, and, for goodness sake, even his feelings.

A mysterious letter and a package containing an old newspaper pique Theo's interest. With Jules' help, he follows the "breadcrumbs" to a new adventure.

The Star Agency, by R. E. Weber, is a fun science fiction for kids. It's the first book in the Star Agency Chronicles. With questions left unanswered, the second book should continue the exciting adventures.

5.0 su 5 stelle A Successor to Orson Scott Card? Quite possibly. 30 settembre 2015

I came across this book via one of the author's Twitter send-outs, if I remember correctly. It intrigued me enough when I checked out the Goodreads synopsis that I added it to my list of things to read... and promptly forgot about it for a while.

Today, realizing that I didn't have access to two of the other books that I'm currently reading, I was scrolling through my kindle cloud reader list, and saw The Star Agency again. "Eh...sure, why not?" I thought. So I opened it, and started reading. I don't think I was a full tenth of the way into the book before I started raving about it on Twitter.

The problem with 'space' books, is that (pertaining to your average reader) you can either knock it out of the park... or fail horribly by boring the reader to tears. The Star Agency, much like Ender's Game, scores a home run easily. R.E. Weber has done an extremely credible job of giving the reader a scifi story on a simple enough level that 10 year old could read it, but keeping it interesting enough that adults should have no problem visually devouring it either.

Note: Sometimes it is so hard to do these reviews completely spoiler-free!

The characters are fleshed-out, and believable in their actions. The main character, especially, has a talent for putting his foot in it in a typical teenager's way. The reactions to surprises, shocks, etc, are all very appropriate for their age groups. There's a hint of potential romance, but not enough to detract from the story itself.

I liked the world-building. I hate info-dumps, though I do recognize their necessity at times. R.E. Weber manages to give us the information we need without feeling like we're constantly reading massive immovable walls of text. I could not tell you in great detail what Polisium looked like, and I'm perfectly okay with that. I've said it before and I'll say it again - our imagination is our greatest gift.

Overall, The Star Agency is a fantastic book, and thus far stands out as the best indie published book that I have read this year. Fantastic work from a very talented author.

4.0 su 5 stelle Great Science Fiction Targeted to Younger Readers 9 agosto 2016
Di 5X Space Cadet - Pubblicato su

I thoroughly enjoyed this story about Theopolis James Logan's grand adventure, which has barely begun, since this is the first book in a series. He's a somewhat typical 13 year old, highly intelligent, a bit too outspoken for his own good, bored with school as the highly intelligent usually are, and generally disaffected by his life. Sound familiar? Whether you're someone who has already survived the teen years or dealing with them yourself, you will relate to Theo.

The suspense is well-sustained and keeps you turning the pages. The author has spun a great science fiction tale and created a vivid world. This story is a clean read with plenty of adventure and believable characters. While suitable for young readers, it's an enjoyable "stress free" read for adults as well. However, remember this story is designed and targeted for younger readers, for whom it's an excellent introduction to the world of sci-fi, but may not be what you're looking for if you're expecting a more sophisticated story/writing style populated with adult characters.

I appreciate the fact that the author stated that this book took years to write. I have to admit that I can truly relate to that, since mine did, too. To fully confess, I, too have written a young adult science fiction series and I truly believe that anyone who enjoys Weber's story would enjoy my Star Trails Tetralogy and vice versa.

This was really good. Up there with David Eddings books, which I love and tend to read over and over again. I loved Theo and hope there's another story with him, and that he survives at the end of all his adventures.

5.0 su 5 stelle Well written coming of age story set in space 22 giugno 2015

I got this book because it was compared to things like Flight of The Navigator and ET. Could have raised expectations way more then the book was but happily it was a real entertaining read that took readers on the same journey the boy took as he finds a chance for the adventure of a lifetime. Will Theopolis choose to continue to follow the results of the breadcrumbs he and his friend Julia found. Or will he choose to stay home. Although I was not in the target audience of a young adult nor do I read much science fiction this definitely is a book that will appeal to a large audience. The book is very descriptive and makes you really be able to imagine every new site he encounters. Has the potential to be a good movie someday.
