Sinossi

What goes on inside your grant reviewer's head? Understanding this is the key to avoiding rejection and getting your next grant funded. You may wonder...What is my reviewer really looking for? Did they reject my grant just because of politics? Why did one reviewer love my grant and another one hate it? How can I revise my grant to make it more fund-able?

The answers lie within a four step process reviewers go through when they read your grant proposal - a process most reviewers aren't even aware they're doing. If you gloss over one of these steps - or worse, leave it out all together - your grant will be rejected, and you may get cryptic reviews back that don't explain why it was rejected or help you avoid another rejection.

Four Steps to Funding gives you the simple process that will clarify your thinking, organize your proposal, and address reviewer objections before you submit your grant. Going far beyond the typical "word-smithing" and fill-in-the-blank examples of other grant writing books, 4 steps to funding gets into the mind of your reviewer and provides techniques for persuading him/her of the value of your work, your own credibility, and your approach.

Written in an easy to read, engaging style, the concepts in this book are critical, for writing NIH or NSF grants. However, the concepts are easily applicable to Foundation, SBIR, or even business or non-profit proposals.

It is your turn to crack the code, by learning the four steps that your next grant proposal must have in order to succeed. Your proposal will go beyond providing the facts and will get your reviewer excited about your work, and ready to fund it!

L'autore

Morgan Giddings, PhD is a professor who has written over $23 million worth of funded grant proposals, primarily competitive NIH science grants, but also business and community grants. She now teaches the concepts of grant writing to people all over the globe.

3.0 su 5 stelle fun read but superficial 1 novembre 2014

I found some of the examples interesting and overall the book prompted me to rethink my strategy and focus less on the science and more on the "advertising". However running a bike shop and running a research lab are not as similar as this book tries to make them appear. Overall the book is really superficial and spends more time repeating what you should do than actually explaining how you should do it. Not much new information here but it will invite you to think about how you approach writing PROPOSALS.

I found it very annoying that the author kept referring to it as "writing grants". Many NSF program managers would remind you that you write proposals to get grants; you do not write grants.

4.0 su 5 stelle Must read 23 aprile 2013

I have read many books about grant writing and I can tell you this is not the ordinary book you'll find out there devoting liters of ink on how to organize the data you present on a grant application. Instead, this book helps you to understand what must be done (as well as what's not to be done) when writing an application and how you should focus your proposal in order to increase your chances of getting the funds you are looking for. It is very easy to read but make no mistake, it moves you to take a careful look about what you are doing and that's it's real value. Very recommendable.

5.0 su 5 stelle essential to scientists 30 aprile 2013

I took a couple of Morgan's lessons past years and thought I kind of know what she is teaching. While the basic concept I might have learned, this book gave me clearer points and what to do with my overall scientific "communication". No wonder she has been/is a successful grant writer. So much to learn not only in the grant writing, also how to communicate my science/ideas with others. Thank you, Morgan.

5.0 su 5 stelle a quick read packed with helpful tips 22 aprile 2013

I read this in one evening and find myself constantly trying to apply the advice as I write my grants. After reading the book, the advice seems like such common sense, but having submitted/reviewed many failed applications, I know that most people are not thinking in the way that Dr. Giddings is suggesting. I highly recommend this for anyone who needs a new perspective on grant writing.

Very effective guide.
I liked the insight she shared from her experience with her "conventional" business (bike shop) and how that was applicable to research funding. I am unsure I want too many other scientists to read it, competition for funding is high, I like if I could keep this advantage.
