This book is a complex suspense with just enough nail biting tension to keep you reading. It starts very well, and drew me in with vivid description that made me feel as if I was almost there with the characters.
There are a lot of characters, and there's a lot to get your head around in this well-crafted book. It's not a murder-mystery as such because we already know who the killer is, but the fascinating angle the author takes is the motivations of the characters. What makes them behave in this way? Is there something in their past that has them reacting like this?
Mara Mann wants revenge and she has found a way to get it, but how many lives will she put at risk if she tries to do things her own way?
Trent Oakes wants revenge, and he is determined to get it. He won't rest until the last of the guilty men are destroyed.
Charles Dean is a man who controls people with his power, but how powerful will he be when there are at least two people determined to get even? And why is he protecting Reid Dalton?
We follow Mara and Trent in their separate and parallel paths to bring down Charles Dean.
Jenny Hilborne has created a wealth of strong and believable characters in a book with an expertly plotted storyline. This would do well as a film, I think; so much of the action almost jumps off the page.
It ended on a bit of a cliffhanger, a loose ending, that although is acceptable as a way of making the reader wonder about what might happen next, does start me thinking that perhaps a series might be forthcoming in the future. There are definitely enough interesting characters for that to become a reality. Whether or not that happens, Stone Cold is a solid read, a great suspense that will take you into the sordid world of corporate corruption, BDSM, and the criminal mind.
