With Strings Attached, or The Big Pink Job, is a major epic fantasy whose main characters are the Beatles (well the ex-Beatles, given that it's set in 1980).

One April morning the four awaken on another planet! Terrified, furious, and homesick, they must endure the insanity of two different civilizations, and the ministration of three obnoxious aliens, during their struggle to find out what's going on and how to get home.

Eventually they find themselves spectacularly equipped to embark on a quest that, if successful, will remove a curse on a continent. Too bad they detest the place and its people... and too bad that not everyone wants them to succeed....

A serious contribution to the overall literature of fantasy and often hysterically funny, as well as a sly and skewed parallel to their real experiences as Beatles, Strings is also distinguished by being the only fantasy ever written with four comitted pacifists as the protagonists. Yet it's filled with action, adventure, mystery, and even a touch of philosophy. Twenty-nine years in the writing, Strings has been praised for its very realistic depiction of John, Paul, George, and Ringo, whose book personalities are based on their real ones, not those created for their movies. There are also many entertaining secondary characters who help or hinder the four on their not entirely unwelcome journey across planets and universes.

And then there's magic. Oh, yeah.

5.0 su 5 stelle An interesting read, whether you've heard of the Beatles or not 10 gennaio 2013

A fan work many years in the making, the premise of 'With Strings Attached' is as such: The Beatles are transported to an alternate universe where magic exists; given fresh, 20-year-old bodies; and left to their own devices as part of an alien psychology experiment. However things quickly get out of hand and before long the Fab Four find themselves questing for a relic that will bring peace to the planet they are marooned on and possibly allow them to go home. An interesting take on the 'stranger in a strange land' premise, with a bit of Beatles flair thrown in, With Strings Attached is an entertaining read for anyone who enjoys The Beatles, high fantasy, tabletop RPGs, and any combination therein.
4.0 su 5 stelle Not just for Beatles fans....a wonderful epic fantasy! 7 giugno 2010

A wonderful novel over 25 years in the making, "With Strings Attached" is a great read for Beatles fans, lovers of fan fiction and afficionados of epic fantasy! Aviva Rothschild spent the better part of 29 years working on this book, and the care and love and attention to detail shows in every page! Featuring the Beatles like you have never seen (or possibly imagined) them before, the story takes you to a world unlike any other and sets our heroes on a quest that stays with the reader long after the final page is finished.

I first found this story in its incarnation on the Web many years ago, when it was still unfinished. The completed result was more than worth the wait, as it is captivating and so well-written! Definitely NOT just another example of "average" (or, more accurately, below-average") fan fiction, it is clearly a labor of love by the author -- love for the Beatles, of course, but also love for her chosen genre as she flawlessly executes a fine example of a genre that can be very difficult to work in believably. Those who think there is nothing new under the fantasy sun will be pleasantly surprised. The world of C'hou is fully realized, and the characters that populate it ring true.

Don't let the size of the volume daunt you -- once you pick up this book you will not want to put it down -- and you will be eagerly awaiting a sequel!
5.0 su 5 stelle With Strings Attached 16 maggio 2012

Aviva Rothschild has managed to combine our love for The Beatles and our love for science fiction fantasy into an exquisitely crafted novel. With Strings Attached manages to hold the reader's attention from start to finish and left this reviewer wanting more. Aviva juggles three concepts into one book, not an easy task. In 1980, the ex-Beatles are transported to another planet with magic and must undertake a journey that costs them their ideas of what is real and what isn't. But the four do not know, nor do the inhabitants of the planet, that they are all at the whim of another race of beings running computer programs. A great read, a great idea, and I am told there is going to be a sequel. I am chomping at the bit already!
