I am a big Mark Rippetoe fan. Not to get preachy, but his books really have changed my life. I have been lifting for a long time and with marginal results. Rippetoe's thoughts on strength training and the overall fitness industry are spot on. After using some of the principles in his books and also Jim Wendler's 5-3-1, i have made more progress in the last 2 years than in the rest of my lifting life combined. There is a lot of bullsh*t out there regarding strength training, so do yourself a favor and read anything by Mark Rippetoe. To be specific about this book, it has a lot of the content in some of his other books, but this is on a more personal level. He gives some background on his experiences and perspective on where his opinions are derived. I would say to buy his other book Starting Strength first, followed by Practical Programming for Strength training second. This is a good add-on, but doesn't have as much specific information as the other 2 books.

I am a fan of Mark Rippetoe and his strength training programs. If you are too, this book will be a worthwhile recreational read. There are some interesting contentions made and also a few anecdotes and methods of describing the importance of strength that might be useful to the strength coach looking to convince someone away from the Bosu ball. I don't look to attain more than a 300/400/500 lifting ability, but I appreciate Rip's views on fitness and life and think that the fitness industry is way too far to the other side of the spectrum (towards ellipticals and the Bosu ball). Every guy could stand to have a callus or two torn off his hand during a deadlift during his training.

If you like Rip, buy it. If you're on the fence about Rip, it might convince you to join the dark side, or you may be turned off. Either way, it's worth the read, if only to get you off of the fence.

If you are reading this review, you are likely a serious lifter. Thus, try this book and you will enjoy "Rip's" pontifications on the major lifts, specific form, some very humorous observations on health habits, etc.

This being my first book of his, I am not familiar with the others. Regardless, this is an enjoyable read and although some of the descriptions on form are somewhat dry, that's acceptable. He freely admits and warns us gentle readers. Bully for the author!

Being a collection of essays, the book covers different subjects. As an instructional, it's worthy. As motivation to do squats, deadlifts, and presses (not seated), it's wonderful. Most importantly, he writes in an educated and direct style. If he were writing about cooking, you could detect that he lifts.

If you don't squat or deadlift, you will be insulted by this book. And that's OK because Rip won't care.

It's refreshing to read the musings of someone who's obviously done his homework, lifted hard, and managed to carve an interesting existence doing something he clearly enjoys.

I hope to get a visitor's workout at Wichita Falls Athletic Club and hopefully, meet Rip!

Interesting book. If you've already read SS, a lot of this book will seem familiar. A lot of his personal thoughts/opinions are expanded upon here. It's nice in the sense that it drills in some of his opinions a bit more. I do see some people finding that a little boring though. Personally, I went through this book slowly whenever I wasn't busy, but didn't have enough time to "do" something.

Most of these articles or ideas can be read in other Rip's books or articles, but it's good to have a single place to read most of them, especially if you haven't read them before and want to recommend Starting Strength ideas to someone new to this, or to re-read them and yet again try to understand them and remember them.
