"Connie Shelton gets better with every book she writes." --The Midwest Book Review

USA Today bestselling author Connie Shelton introduces her most delightful cozy mystery series yet--a little romance, a little magic and a lot of chocolate!

When she's not baking her delectable pastries Samantha Sweet breaks into houses for a living. Sometimes, the things she discovers lead to trouble. When she finds an unmarked grave on a property in a remote spot in Taos County, New Mexico, Sam calls in the authorities. A small mural painted inside a closet in the abandoned house provides clues and Sam is caught up in an investigation alongside the good-looking Deputy Beau Cardwell. A fortune in artwork, a bogus will, and a wooden box that seems to give Sam powers she never dreamed she possessed--it all adds up to a dynamic paranormal romantic mystery.

Then, there is all that chocolate! Sam's real goal in life is to use her elegant baking skills to open her own pastry shop, Sweet's Sweets. She's gaining quite the reputation as a baker with a magical touch, but a few obstacles stand in her way. Her grown daughter shows up on her doorstep--jobless and homeless; her bank account is at an all-time low; and trying to work from the tiny cramped kitchen in her home is becoming impossible.

Somehow, Sam copes and she finds that her dreams might just have a chance of coming true.

I loved this book, well-written, well-edited and with a gripping plot. Samantha (Sam) is a woman who cleans abandoned houses before they can be put on the market for sale. Sam is also a skilled baker and wants to open up the pastry shop of her dreams, Sweet’s Sweets. She has never found anything weird during her caretaking tasks. But, one day, first she enters a house – which is supposed to be empty – where a dying lady gives her a wooden box, begging her to put it in a safe place because it keeps a secret. In fact, Sam soon discovers that the box gives her power and energy when touched. Then, while mowing the lawn at another house she comes across a grave without a tombstone. So she summons the police to investigate the mystery and to find out the identity of the buried body. Of course, the buried man did not die a natural death, but he was killed with poison. Sam soon realises she has also a natural detecting ability and begins to snoop around to find clues. She finds a mural painted inside a closet, a forged will and a sketch-book: everything leads to a famous artist. In the end, Sam’s involvement in the investigation is rewarded: maybe Sweet’s Sweets is no longer only a dream.
The plot flows smoothly, with fantastic descriptions of the landscape of Taos, New Mexico, where the mystery is set. Highly recommended.

5.0 su 5 stelle Makes me homesick for New Mexico 22 marzo 2011

Wow, this was an incredible book. I felt like I had been transported right back to New Mexico.

Characters - I thought all of the characters in the book were well developed and well rounded. It took a little while to get there but the details were fleshed out nicely and the characters seemed very real. I lived in New Mexico for a number of years and I thought that the author did a brilliant job with the characters and captured the essence of living in New Mexico. Some of the characters reminded me of friends that I have left back there.

Plot - This book grabbed me from the first couple of chapters and kept me reading straight through to the end. The plot advanced very nicely with no stumbles or illogical twists or turns. I felt the pace flowed very well and kept me interested at every point in the book. I felt no desire to skip ahead in this book.

Language, sexual content, violence - NONE in this book. There is a budding romance and it doesn't include every detail of what they do. There is no swearing and no violence in this book. It would be a good general audience book.

I have already started the second book in the series (which I downloaded as soon as I finished the first book). The characters are very likable and the book has a "down home" charm to it. I did feel like I was back in northern New Mexico with some of my friends. I hope the second book is as good as the first one was. The book was very professionally done. It also had no formatting, spelling or grammar issues.

The only thing that I would have loved to have seen in this book were a mention of the interesting "Cow Crossing" signs that are all over Taos...

3.0 su 5 stelle Not a Believable Mystery but Decent 29 novembre 2013

Okay, this story and its characters are pretty interesting. But there is one HUGE problem I cannot get around:

I have not finished reading this book because I keep getting annoyed at the fact that a death is being investigated where the body was found in an unmarked grave in the victim's backyard and yet it's being ruled as "natural causes" and it doesn't seem suspicious because the victim is elderly.

REALLY??! At no point do investigators ponder WHO buried the victim in the backyard. Like, he died of natural causes and buried himself. Obviously, if I was the one investigating this, I would most certainly want to know WHO buried him and WHY. If he died naturally, why not call the coroner? Why take him out back and bury him? It's so stupid!!!

Also, why would the sheriff's deputy let a common citizen assist in the crime scene investigation?? That's ridiculous!!!

So, if you're looking for hard-boiled police procedural here, f'get about it. But Sam Sweet is an interesting lady with an interesting life.

Side note: this has an element of supernatural thrown in, which also doesn't fit in with the story, so if you're not a fan of that, it's going to annoy you, and if you are, it might not have enough of it anyway to be to your liking. I am pretty much ignoring that aspect because it doesn't really add or take away from the story, at least not so far.

3 stars for having good characters and story line except for actual mystery. (Hey, there's much worse out there, trust me.)

3.0 su 5 stelle Triple Chocolate Kahlua Cupcakes 5 ottobre 2010
Di Margaret Lake - Pubblicato su

Any book that has Triple Chocolate Kahlua Cupcakes on the first page has to be worth reading.

This is a cozy mystery set in Taos, New Mexico. Samantha Sweet is a part-time caretaker of foreclosed properties, but she wants to start her own bakery business; Sweet's Sweets.

In the course of her caretaking duties, she finds a dying woman with the reputation of being a witch and an unmarked grave at another property. Two in one day? A little too coincidental, but that brings the police into the picture in the person of Beau Cardwell, the love interest.

I didn't have much feeling for Sam until she talked about her early years (she's in her 50's here) and how she ended up in Taos with a daughter. Then she became more real to me.

It wasn't too difficult to figure out some of the elements of the mystery, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It's always nice to find out you are right.

I gave this three stars because there was just too much description of housecleaning and cake icing. Otherwise, Sweet Masterpiece is a well-written enjoyable read. If you want to relax for the afternoon, this is a nice book to do it with.

Unfortunately, there was no recipe for Triple Chocolate Kahlua Cupcakes in the back of the book.

I don't like to leave less than positive feedback but this book was a miss. The author did try to give good character development but went too far. I didn't need to have a play by play of the main character Sam's lunch every day. And it got so muddied as to what we as the readers were to focus on! What's with the magic box? How does her pastry business have anything to do with the story? Too many ideas and a lack of focus. Sorry :(

I thought the premise of this book was very interesting. I read the whole thing, and came away disappointed. There were what felt like multiple plot lines in the book. I would read the next book in the series, but with the hope that it's more focused, and free. The magical portion of the book was an after thought, just thrown in from time to time. It just didn't make sense what it was doing in there. Also the relationship with the daughter was just off. First the author sets out to have you dislike her, but then that changes. I don't know. I thought the main character's line of work was interesting, and the magic part as well. Just really disappointed in where the book went with that.
