5.0 su 5 stelle Exquisite illustrations to accompany the master of horror's greatest works 14 dicembre 2016
Di katphoti - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Copertina rigida Acquisto verificato
I already have a book of the complete works of Edgar Allan Poe, but I bought this book solely for the illustrations. Edgar Allan Poe is one of my very favorite authors and his work will always haunt and frighten me. True horror comes from allowing yourself to be fully immersed in the story and understand the true nature of what the author is trying to convey. These illustrations by Harry Clarke are quite probably the best depictions of the terrors as Poe put them on the page. While we can all make our own images in our minds, Clarke's interpretations give us more to explore and consider concerning Poe's psyche. Poe will always be a master of horror and suspense that will keep us frightened for centuries to come.

Please note, I only state there is some sexual content in that there is some implied sexuality in some of the stories, but nothing explicit.

5.0 su 5 stelle Tales of Mystery and Imagination - E A Poe, Calla Edition 16 dicembre 2008
Di Charles Stembridge - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Copertina rigida Acquisto verificato
I have been keeping an eye out for this book since I first saw it in my High School Library in the early '60s. What was memorable were the surreal illustrations, and were the best effort I had ever seen in capturing the mood of Poe's stories. This book is a very fine production. It is a black cloth hardback, and the pages are oversized and heavy bond paper slightly yellow off-white color. Most of the illustrations are black and white pen & ink, with a few in color. All of the illustrations are single page, that is the other side of the page is blank; a mark of high quality. This is the definate 'Must Have' edition for anyone interested in Poe's works. I would also rate this book as a 'Best Buy', given the price to quality ratio.

Bibliographical Note (Quote)
'Tales of Mystery and Imagination', first published by Calla Editions in 2008, is an unabridged republication of the edition originally published by Tudor Publishing Co., New York, in 1933.

From the Publisher (Quote)
The works of Edgar Allan Poe, in the rarefied company of Thoreau, Hawthorne, Twain, and Melville, represent the full flowering of American literature in the nineteenth century. By itself, this edition would be an outstanding collection of 29 tales of mystery, suspense, and the macabre; but what sets this volume apart are the magnificent illustrations of Harry Clarke. Many artists have attempted to illustrate Poe, though it is no easy feat to match graphically the powerful effect of Poe's words on the reader. Harry Clarke's ambitious attempt is widely regarded as a resounding triumph. While his color-plate work here is excellent, it is Clarke's fine-line full-page Pen & ink drawings that superbly bring to life the intense phychological dramas so central to Poe's storytelling. These richly atmospheric and densely textured creations make this the definitive illustrated edition of an undisputed giant of the American literary canon.

5.0 su 5 stelle Beautiful book, amazing illustrations by Harry Clarke 8 febbraio 2012
Di RoseRed - Pubblicato su Amazon.com

I bought this specifically for the illustrations by Harry Clarke. The pictures are flat out amazing,
the detail is equally astonishing. This is a big hardback book, and the paper is very high quality,
but I am concerned that the binding is glued instead of sewn. I don't know enough about publishing/binding
to know if there are any book bindings that are sewn anymore even, but I anticipate having to get this
book reglued at some point because it's so big (this is based on experiences with other big books with glue
based binding). This is only a minor concern though; overall, this is a great price for such a gorgeous book.
The illustrations enhance and amplify Poe's stories in a perfect marriage of text and picture. I usually
don't want illustrations with my books (I want the image left up to me) but this is a lovely, lovely exception.
One last note: this was a present that I ordered eight days early and it took two weeks to arrive. I don't
know if the blame lies with the seller or the delivery system, but it obviously didn't arrive in time for the birthday.
It seems to me that Amazon isn't nearly as fast as they used to be, shipping wise. One of the main reasons I love Amazon
is for the free super saver shipping, but I'm going to check other sources first if I continue to receive items past reasonable
delivery dates.

5.0 su 5 stelle Gorgeous edition of Poe's Tales of Mystery and Imagination 17 ottobre 2013
Di Z Hayes - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Copertina rigida Acquisto verificato
I've loved the stories of Edgar Allan Poe since I was a child and every October, as part of my Halloween tradition, I revisit his writings. Lately, I've been watching some of the classic film adaptations of some of Poe's more popular works, and been reading the stories right after, just to mix things up a little, and it has been an enjoyable experience.

I've been collecting the Easton Press' Collector's Editions and the 100 Greatest Books Ever Written Series for several years and I can't gush enough about the impeccable quality of these books. Each has a unique design on the covers, in 22K gold accents, and has beautiful genuine leather bindings, moire endpapers, and a satin ribbon page marker, all of which are hallmarks of the Easton Press' collector's editions. Even though many of these books were printed in the 1970s, the archival quality paper ensures these books will continue to endure for many more years, and will enhance any collector's library. This edition of Poe's Tales of Mystery and Imagination will make an excellent gift for an ardent Poe fan.

5.0 su 5 stelle Not only is this a great collection of some of Poe's best works 15 marzo 2016
Di John P. Irish - Pubblicato su Amazon.com

Not only is this a great collection of some of Poe's best works, it is masterly illustrated by Harry Clarke. It is a reproduction of a book published in the 1930s. All of the Calla Editions are great. If you are a fan of Poe, who isn't, you need this on your shelf. If you are looking for the complete writings of Poe in a modern edition, I highly recommend the Library of America two volume edition of his works.
