Sinossi

Groucho Marx’s career as a solo performer began long before the Marx Brothers and lasted almost until the end of his life, with a series of controversial sold-out concerts in his eighties. In between came several films, numerous television and radio appearances, theater performances, dramatic acting and writing and his smash hit radio and TV quiz show You Bet Your Life (1947–1961).
This first ever comprehensive study of his work without his famous brothers reveals a Groucho perhaps unfamiliar to the public. Driven to prove he was much more than just a comedian with a greasepaint (later real) mustache, Groucho always thought of himself as essentially a solo performer and strove for individual success in his professional life—and to balance (if not always successfully) his career with his family life. Many rare photographs are included, along with new and previously unpublished interviews.

5.0 su 5 stelle O Solo Groucho! 4 settembre 2016
Di J. Brennan - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Formato Kindle Acquisto verificato
Matthew Coniam's follow-up to the wonderful The Annotated Marx Brothers, That's Me, Groucho is a unique and insightful look at Groucho Marx not as one of the Marx Brothers, but as a solo performer. The book covers any and all appearances Groucho made without his famous brothers (Harpo, Chico, Zeppo and Gummo) from the early days of vaudeville up to his final appearances not long before his death. The main focus of the book is on Groucho's work, whether on radio, television or stage; if you're looking for juicy gossip and scandalous tidbits, this is not the book for you. When you have finished the final chapter. you have not one, not two, but *five* separate appendices, two by Matthew and three by fellow Marx Brothers fans, and each one thoroughly filled with information and good humor. Add to that a forward by famous Groucho interpreter Frank Ferrante, and, needless to say, Coniam's thoughtful and amusing prose throughout the whole book, and you've got another worthy addition to your Marx Brothers bookshelf.

3.0 su 5 stelle While I enjoyed much of the content 22 dicembre 2016
Di Hallauthor - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Copertina flessibile Acquisto verificato
While I enjoyed much of the content, I was very bothered by the book's format which made it seem slighter than perhaps it was. As a Groucho fan, there were certainly worthwhile tidbits contained within which made it worth the purchase, but a book like this deserved a more serious presentation to the reader.

5.0 su 5 stelle The first detailed study of Groucho's solo years 25 agosto 2016
Di Noah Diamond - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Copertina flessibile
On the heels of his last book, the indispensable "Annotated Marx Brothers," Matthew Coniam provides an engrossing and unprecedented study of Groucho's post-Brothers solo career. While Groucho biographies overwhelmingly dwell on his personal struggles during this period, this is the first book to offer a serious, detailed exploration of Groucho the artist in late career. In addition to a great deal of new and important research, the book features the depth of insight, self-conscious wit, and beautifully-crafted prose that made "The Annotated Marx Brothers" an instant classic.

5.0 su 5 stelle Great writing by a fine writer . . . . 30 marzo 2017
Di M. Dog - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Copertina flessibile
Brilliant writer - Whatever Matthew writes is worth reading. This book is no exception. The author's enthusiasm for the subject is obvious, and his way with words is so entertaining, one need not even be a Groucho fan to love this book.
