This 2007 album was the first Crowded House album to be recorded after Paul Hester's untimely and terribly sad passing. It also came after the band had played an extremely emotional farewell show outside of the Syndney Opera House, taken a seriously long 'career break' from each other. Neil Finn had been of the apparent belief that as the principal songwriter and vocalist with the band, he was in a great position to carry on from where they left off. While his solo career may have been satisfying, it did not provide the same financial return as the band had. Nick Seymour, Crowded House's bassist, was playing on a few Finn solo tracks and the album they were working on turned into a new band album.
The album's songs touch in places on the subject of Hester's passing and often has a darker, quite melancholy mood as a result. After repeated listens to this reissue (I sadly ignored the album upon its original release, as I personally missed Hester too much in the promo TV slots to let myself get involved with it), the singles now make more sense and I can listen to the album for what it is - a second phase Crowded House album. The songs are less quirky than they used to be. There is no 'Kill Eye' or 'Love you til the day I die' on here. What you do get is some extremely classy pop music, sometimes far more subdued and more mainstream in approach than the classic Crowded House maybe, but still wonderful.
'Nobody wants to' and 'Don't stop now' are obvious singles. The album features the guitar work of Johnny Marr, guitarist and songwriter of The Smiths, on "Even a Child" and lead single "Don't Stop Now;" Marr co-wrote the former song with Finn. It injects some wonderful energy and vibrancy into the proceedings.
The standout track for me, however, is the atmospheric 'You are the one to make me cry' - the story of a man (Robert Hewitt) swept out to sea by the tide and lost for three days, surviving for four days and three nights by eating kina and crayfish and sucking watery mist from his oxygen tank, before slowly losing everything he had, until it was just him, half-naked and alone in the cold sea. An inspired piece of writing, which recounts Hewitt's terrible state of mind when he thought he was certain to die lost at sea, hallucinating and decomposing. Google his story as told to the NZ Herald in 2006. It is astonishing that it did not end up a total tragedy.
The original album is accompanied by a second disc of mainly unreleased bonus material. The whole package (as with all of the Crowded House deluxe reissues) is an extremely attractive long box, containing a gatefold booklet size box, booklet and double disc set.
I have to confess I sprang for all seven of them.
