When I tried to update to the latest firmware, it bricked my watch. I'm pretty sure it was an app issue but it somehow drained the battery and the watch stopped ticking. Timex customer service was extremely responsive and replaced the watch for free. Good to know they stand behind their products.
I'm normally not a fan of busy dials on watches. I prefer them to be more minimalist but I had to be realistic here. Having said that, Timex have done a good job in showing the relevant information without making the dial too crowded. The 42mm case diameter on this watch gives a good balance of readability without appearing oversized. The watch case is quite thick compared to quartz watches but not so much when compared to the more affordable automatic watches and I find it's not that noticeable once it's on the wrist. The battery life is estimated at 1.5 years so no concerns about remembering to keep it charged.
I prefer the progress meter on this watch over a digital readout as you can see visually how far from your goal you are which, as another reviewer already said, is more motivating. It's also why I liked the Misfit Flash as the ring of LEDs served a similar purpose. The advantage with this watch is that you just need to glance at your progress whereas on the Misfit you have to press it each time to light up the LEDs. The analog watch dial is also preferable in that I can see how far the day has progressed too. Being a Timex it has the iconic indiglo backlight as well as luminous hands.
The smartphone app is mediocre compared to the Misfit one but it does have history for previous days, weeks and months. If you're not interested in keeping track of your activity you can continue using the watch without the app since it not only has a progress meter but also a fourth hand to show number of steps or distance depending on mode. However you'll still need the app to set or change your progress goal which means you will need a smartphone or tablet device to start using this watch initially.
The watch is very easy to operate. Other than the progress meter and fourth hand needed to show your current activity, the only operational difference between this and a regular Timex quartz analog watch is the addition of a mode button. This operates a dial indicator on the upper left of the dial to show what mode the watch is currently in. The Bluetooth mode being the one you use to sync your activity data with the Timex app.
In conclusion this is just what I was looking for, a great looking watch that unobtrusively doubles as an activity tracker. The watch itself is 5 stars but the mediocre app means overall I give it 4.
Secondly, I purchased this watch based on a promise from Timex that sleep monitoring will be released in spring 2016, spring is over and sleep tracking is not available yet plus Timex removed the text they had on their web site about the sleep tracking which means it will never be available.
Extremely dissappointed from Amazon and Timex!
Good stuff: Simple to read watch. Set goals and you can see the percentage achieved without going through stupid menus. Just look at the dial.
Bad stuff: It looses a minute a day(!) Maybe that is just a flaw in my particular watch but I would not expect it for a quartz watch.
Good stuff: It is a really nice looking watch and just the right size.
Bad stuff: (BTW: I don't really care about this but if you do here it is) The app for this watch is stupid and cumbersome. It doesn't tell progress over time and syncing the watch is painful. I stopped using it and I am getting all I need from this watch
Good stuff: It auto resets the activity counter at midnight everyday so there is no need to reset anything manually.
Overall a good looking watch that I have taken to wearing daily. I don't need to recharge it or sync it or mess with it if I don't want to. It just tells me in percentage how I am doing at achieving my walking goals.
