A breakthrough approach to dog training, tapping the power of cooperation by integrating a dog’s natural instinct with an owner’s personality.

Kate Perry has seen it all: the secret pee-ers, the delivery-man harassers, the agoraphobics. Every dog presents a unique set of drives, traits, and needs—and so does every owner. Delivering the effective approach that has made her a highly sought-after canine consultant, Training for Both Ends of the Leash incorporates the owner’s lifestyle and household setup to create a balanced training program and reliable behavior for dogs and their owners.

Training for Both Ends of the Leash helps identify a dog’s dominant drives and personality so that owners can develop a personalized training system that targets specific problems. Only positive reinforcement is permitted, and owners are taught how to appropriately accommodate a dog’s tendencies, leading to a fun, loving, and respectful atmosphere in which owner and pet can forge a strong bond based on trust. Featuring personal stories from her client files, along with Perry’s unique Canine-ality Quiz to determine your dog’s temperment and advice with Professor Sophie (Kate’s pug, who has helped train more than 3,000 dogs), the book covers every concern, from housebreaking and socialization to street smarts and anxiety.
For anyone who is struggling with a new dog or simply wants to improve a situation with a current dog, Training for Both Ends of the Leash puts people and their pups on the road to domestic bliss.

HASH(0x9c33733c) su 5 stelle World's best trainer! 3 ottobre 2012
Di Desmond - Pubblicato su
Formato: Copertina flessibile
When we adopted our 10-week-old Australian cattle dog mix rescue four years ago, we immediately went to Kate (who was highly recommended by our vet). That's when we began our incredible training adventures beginning with puppy socialization classes and continuing through all kinds of intermediate and advanced commands and tricks in group and private sessions where, in addition to the fun stuff, we also worked on a variety of issues that make life in the city so challenging for a herding dog and his guardians.

Kate's extremely professional, generous, cheerful, positive approach, which she tailors perfectly to the needs of each dog, has helped us to build an amazing relationship with Ollie, which wouldn't be what it is without her. With Kate it's not about telling your dog what to do, but about learning to communicate with him, understand what he's telling you (and other dogs), and work with him in a way that he will comprehend. People need training as much as their dogs, and Kate shows you how to travel that two-way street successfully with smiles on both ends of the leash. Kate and her book get four paws up from us! Thanks, Kate!

HASH(0x9bff90cc) su 5 stelle An excellent manual for novice dog owners and those looking to improve their dog-training skills. 3 ottobre 2012
Di Library Journal - Pubblicato su
Formato: Copertina flessibile
Kate Perry, a dog trainer, and Conza, the founder of, here explain how different training methods, which take into account an individual dog's drives and personality ("canine-ality") and the owner's lifestyle, can be combined to create a tailor-made program.

Drawing from the foundational work of such trainers as Turid Rugaas and Joachim Volhard, they developed their own program to teach owners how to build a mutually happy relationship through positive reinforcement training.

Their comprehensive, jargon-free guide addresses everything from bringing home a new puppy or rescue to training challenges. Canine
body language, housetraining, loose-leash walking, basic commands, desensitization, and counterconditioning are all explained, as are
equipment, exercise choices, health, and behavior issues. Particularly noteworthy are the chapter on early socialization experiences and the list of additional resources.

VERDICT An excellent manual for novice dog owners and those looking to improve their dog-training skills. On a par with Beth Stern's Oh My
Dog and Victoria Stilwell's It's Me or the Dog. -Florence Scarinci, Nassau Community Coll. Lib., Garden City, NY

HASH(0x9c022d2c) su 5 stelle Excellent Book; Excellent Trainer 3 ottobre 2012
Di EdM - Pubblicato su
Formato: Copertina flessibile
I am a first time dog owner who read as many training books as possible prior to getting our puppy last Spring. Some were good and others not so good. All were rather generic and cookie cutter. Books not being sufficient, we sought out a trainer and came across Kate through recommendations and amazing web reviews. We took her puppy class and basic obedience class. At the end of it, we had an even more awesome puppy -- very well trained and very much happy throughout the process. She and her team are great and I can't imagine a substitute for the experience.

Her book is however, the next best thing to having her in person. It captures the essence of what training should be about -- strengthening the bond between owner and dog through positive reinforcement, meaningful experiences and constant feedback and adjustment. More importantly, it offers much more than generic advice. It invites the owner to consider his/her dog's own personality and gives helpful tips and excellent advice on gearing the training to your dog's personal style.

If you live in NYC and have a new puppy or a challenging behavorial problem with your dog, I highly recommend taking one of Kate's classes or contacting her for a one-on-one session. If you are a dog owner anywhere else on the planet, I would recommend you get her book. You (and your dog) will not be disappointed.

HASH(0x9bf8deac) su 5 stelle Amazing and eye-opening, completely changed my relationship w my dogs 3 ottobre 2012
Di Alex Elise - Pubblicato su
Formato: Copertina flessibile
Wow. Kate Perry is amazing! Training for Both Ends of the Leash is a must-read if you own a dog, no matter the age.
I took the fun quizzes and now understand both my dogs personalities so much better - 1 is a "workaholic" and the other a "sensitive artist" It was so interesting to have a frame of reference for their behavior. Working with Kate's tools, which I found very easy to use and apply, I solved my dog Tessie's behavioral issues - she used to be aggressive on the leash with other dogs - and my other dog Tripp's anxiety with thunder. I feel more at ease and more in love with my dogs than ever!

HASH(0x9c1ffb58) su 5 stelle Kate Perry's dog training fixed serious situtations! 3 ottobre 2012
Di Eileen Shulock - Pubblicato su
Formato: Copertina flessibile
First of all, I love Kate and her cheerful "we can fix it" attitude. I know that she works with many people who are having serious difficulties with their dogs.

My Georgia, a 10-pound poodle rescue, almost caused me to lose my home. She barked constantly due to anxiety and abandonment issues. I had endless problems with neighbors and then with a co-op board that did not want dogs in the building.

First of all, Kate was able to assess the situation calmly, which is so helpful when you are completely freaked out. If I had to choose between my dog and my co-op, I would obviously choose my dog, but then where would I live?

She suggested some things I could start right away to refocus Georgia, and then over the course of a few sessions we got to the root of the problem. I learned many techniques and tactics to handle any barking relapses.

Then I of course added another dog to the family. This new member changed the behavior of everyone in the family, including my Georgia. Charlie (my Tibetan Terrier) and Georgia now had to walk together down city streets, which was a nightmare. Plus they needed to learn how to share my husband and myself.

Kate was invited back into my world and she worked with me and my husband to manage these new relationships.

What she helped me remember, most of all, is that having a dog is fun. When you are so freaked about your dog's negative behavior, it's difficult to remember that. Positive training for my dogs means I give them a happy voice and a treat whenever they do something right, which is most of the time these days.

I 150% recommend this book for new owners.

I 200% recommend this book for current owners who don't know that some basic commands, such as "look at me" and "touch" go a long way to resolving many, many issues.
