The Cold War between the Soviet and NATO opposing blocs has been especially tangible in Germany, split in two for the entire duration of this deadly confrontation, which took around 45 years following the capitulation of Hitler’s Reich. Despite sometimes not much publicized, traces of this central episode in recent history indeed exist, especially in the former communist-led German Democratic Republic (GDR, or DDR in German). The oppressive ministry for state security, the STASI, left massive relics after it was dissolved in 1990. One of the most striking materializations of the Iron Curtain was the German Inner Border, a fortified line running all along the border between the ‘Two Germanies’. Of course, Berlin also was cut by the homonymous wall. One of the most militarized states in the world at that time, the GDR hosted a National army (NVA) and an entire Soviet group of forces – this massive military presence also left traces.

This guide is a useful companion to set up a trip to Cold-War-themed destinations in the GDR. Prepared by a person who has been on the spot, it features

I am a researcher in a top-tier technical University, where I'm working on topics of aircraft dynamics and aircraft design, as well as energy production systems.

I have a lifelong passion for aviation, I own a private GA licence and I fly regularly in this category. I often attend airshows.

I'm an amateur photographer with some ten years and hundreds of thousand pictures experience. I've started with a Canon EOS 500D and more recently I've transitioned to a Canon EOS 70D.

I've been traveling to many foreign destinations since my childhood with my parents, and independently after the school years. I was greatly impressed by the deep contrast between the two sides of the Iron Curtain on some travels to Europe as a kid, soon after Communism had 'left the region', and since then many trips of mine are Cold-War-themed. But I've a general interest for traces and relics of all wars and 'momentous events', especially those from the 20th century. I like photographing also architecture and nature.

I travel in very small groups of well-known people, and I preferably go alone on exploration missions of 'forgotten sites'.

I started sharing material from my trips thorugh the website sightraider.com, which I have founded in 2016, and which attracted more interest from around the world than initially expected. since 2021 I've started producing photographic books with a sound historical background.

I am always looking for contact with people with more information about my favorite topics of aviation, history, military history and architecture, but curious people sharing my interests or crazy travel ideas are always welcome!
