Genre: Contemporary Fiction

"He was bound to a stiff metal chair by thick knots of electrical tape wrapped around his legs, chest and arms, his head the only part of him with full mobility. His hair was soaked and matted, plastered against his forehead, a thick sheen of sweat enveloping his face and neck. Lights were flaring wildly around him, and the screeching, inhuman sounds bombarding the room from every angle were terrifying, causing him to constantly throw back his head in paroxysms of fear. It had been half-an-hour, but everything he had said so far had been useless, and so on it went.

But there was no rush – they had all night."

Daniel Mason, British trade representative, moves to Taiwan with his young son Tyler, trying to put the tragedies of his time in Shanghai behind him. But when Tyler falls strangely ill, eating away at the fragile routine Daniel had constructed to simply get by, he finds himself sinking into a darkness that, the further he goes, he may never be able to atone for.

This is the debut novel of James C. Campbell, who spent over three years in Taiwan researching the complexities of Chinese/Taiwanese history and culture, and how the current political stalemate affects not only each country but the day-to-day dealings of locals and expats alike. Typhoon Season is at once the story of one man's struggle with a grief so deep-seated it threatens to destroy him, and also how large-scale sweeps of history play out across the lives of individuals.

This is a complex novel that offers no easy answers. Ultimately the question is not whether you like Daniel Mason, but rather, can you understand him.

Daniel Mason is a character that leaves you conflicted between feelings of sympathy, shock and pity. Campbell weaves a gripping tale that draws you in for more as you feel you are right there with the protagonist soaking in the sights and sounds, experiencing the frantic energy of the streets, enjoying time spent with lovers and living as a foreigner both fascinated and alienated by new surroundings.

An original story with many layers, Typhoon Season leaves you breathless and revaulating everyday sensory experiences.

4.0 su 5 stelle A modern, interesting take on Taiwan with a dark yet mysterious main character. 23 settembre 2012

I would give this 4.5 stars.
The book has a dark and mysterious feeling, with the start following the tone of a political thriller? It's far from this, however setting the scene in the first few chapters with a detailed background of Taiwan's past present and future made me wanting more and more.
Only as the you become immersed into the writers style you follow the mysterious personality of an Expat in Taiwan, and all that life throws at him. You become immersed in the characters experience that leaves you guessing his intent and purpose in the country - mixed emotions towards the character evolve such as pity, disgust and with each turn of events I found myself relating to him even more.

James has provided a novel that is suspenseful, dramatic, dark and mysterious at the same time. After each page I wanted more - and, in a strange way I felt myself being educated at every turn with the thoroughly researched material.

Great read.

5.0 su 5 stelle Engrossing, enjoyable and excellent 17 novembre 2012

This book was a fantastic novel to burn through and read. Campbell's first novel displays a sense of maturity as a writer that many of his older contemporaries take years to fully master. The plot's pacing was excellent and continued to drive the story further. I literally could not put the book down during a recent trip and found myself fully engrossed in reading until the end. Again, this novel is highly recommended.

A very good read. The protagonist Daniel Mason is quite an interesting character to spend your time with. Campbell manages to create a complex persona who endears sympathy in one passage and scorn in the next. Mason makes for a compelling study, and his presence really propels the story. Recommended.

Full disclosure - this is James' stepfather writing this, but I still want to say what I thought about the book.

I have to say it maybe starts a bit slow, but then I really could not put it down after the first few pages. I felt it gives great insight into different cultures and the lives of the characters, and makes you feel as if you've been transported to personally stand behind the characters and become a close observer to their actions.

I thought it was overall brilliantly written, and I really can't wait to read his next one. Great job!
