New York Times bestselling author MaryJanice Davidson “continues to put her own unique spin on paranormal romance” (Fallen Angel Reviews), and in this all-new anthology, she’s three times as outrageous as ever before…

Super, Girl!
Meet Hailey Derry, human resources representative and round-the-clock superhero. Born with the ability to convert anything she eats into crime-fighting energy, Hailey is now faced with her toughest challenge: the sexy new hire who has a mad crush on her. But how does Hailey break the news that she’s more of a Wonder Woman than he can imagine? She’d better think of something fast, because letting this guy go would be a crime.

Undead and Underwater
Betsy, queen of the undead, and Fred, the dour could’ve-been-a-princess mermaid, reluctantly team up to help a mutual friend in trouble. After all, a friend in need is a friend who, well, can really test your patience—because Betsy and Fred aren’t exactly BFFs. What they do have in common is the source of the problem: a man. And what’s more troubling than love?

As leader of the Pack, it’s Lara Wyndham’s job to usher her breed to safety after the cataclysmic Kardashian Riots of 2025—and fend off the advances of Jack Gardner, a sexy Packer with alpha urges and a knack for getting into trouble. No matter how bad Lara wants it, she doesn’t need it. Not that intoxicating scent of his, or his talented mouth, or that perfect ass. Then again…

I love MaryJanice Davidson. I've loved both the "Undead" series and the Fred the Mermaid series. I was understandably excited to find out they'd be joining forces. What a waste.
First off, it is a lie to bill this as a Queen Betsy book. That is one of three short stories this book offers. The first short story introduces a character no one cares about -- and who is rushed through so fast you can't get a feel for her or her surroundings.
The second story involves Betsy and Fred, but it is so poorly written that it's essentially one long piece of dialogue with no character development and plot. I've noticed this problem with the last few Queen Betsy books. It's like Davidson is just tossing a few funny sentences into a book and charging readers an arm and leg for it -- with no care to the product she's actually putting out there.
Betsy hasn't grown as a character since the third book or so -- and she's actually getting more immature. For anyone that hasn't read the previous books, they would not only be completely lost but completely irritated by all the "nods" to her previous work that are never explained.
Quite frankly, Betsy, Sinclair, Fred, Jonas -- everyone involved with this short story, really -- was nothing more than a caricature spouting nonsense.
The final story was about the Wyndham werewolves. I didn't bother reading it.
I never thought I'd say this, but if this is the way Davidson treats her fans, I think I'm done. I want my money back. Since that's not a viable option, I guess I'll just have to make sure I never buy anything by Davidson again.

Horrible! I wish I could get my money back. When I preordered this "book" my expectation was a Betsy book. I feltlike I was reading a high school writing assignment. I've read all MJD's books but I think she needs to stop robo-writing & work on quality of content.

HASH(0x94205e64) su 5 stelle Disappointing and Deceiving 15 marzo 2013

While I still would recommend the book to those who love the stories of Mary Janice Davidson, I can't help but to feel the way I do.

First, the book was titled as an undead series novel. I was so angry to find out it was a combination of novellas. It was entirely misleading. I was so angry to find out it was not a full length novel for the undead series, that I like everyone else was demanding my money back. Extremely unfair to the readers, very deceiving and just down right dirty.

Second, the writing and the editing were horribly done. This especially goes for the mini undead novella. At one point, I had to re-read a section two to three times. Betsy was on a rant or tangent if you prefer, and two other characters warned her not to finish, but instead of making the correct characters, she named Betsy. One of many flaws I found. And the writing was so horribly rushed (again, especially prevalent in the undead novella). It showed. It felt like these were more obligations, than they were something she wanted to write.

And lastly, "It Girl". The only thing I have to say about that is, really??? You couldn't come up with a better name for her?

I never expected this from one of my favorite authors.

HASH(0xae3c0870) su 5 stelle just terrible 31 maggio 2013

I don't really know why I continue to read MJ Davidson's books. She has proved a long time ago that she really isn't that great of a writer and her books are just getting silly and ridiculous. But I guess I have a hard time giving up on a series once I've started it; I want to wait it out and see how the series ends. I started out the Queen Betsy books thinking they were cute and fluffy and something I could read to pass the time when I didn't have anything better on my to-read. But since the 4th or 5th book, things have just started to go downhill fast.
This book is a combination of three novellas, one of which features Betsy Taylor, Queen of the Undead. The other two are about the Wyndham Werewolves and an all new female superhero. I have not read he Werewolves books, nor do I intend to.
The SuperGirl story was just ridiculous. Hailey Derry is a superhero that can eat anything and absorb its energy. She eats things like staplers and makes a poor attempt to hide the fact that she is "it girl." She is chronically late for her dayjob and has a seemingly poor relationship with her co-workers as she is constantly late and surly. There was no character development, no danger, no conflict... nothing! The romance part of the story didn't make sense and was poorly written and I have no intention of reading any more books about this silly super hero.

Undead and Underwater was the next novella, which featured Betsy and the mermaid Fred. I haven't read Fred's books and don't really have the desire to after this novella. Betsy and Fred join forces when a human from the New England Aquarium calls for help and they have to save the underfolk. Betsy and Fred don't exactly hit it off, but you get the sense that beneath the hostility and sarcasm, the two actually kindof like each other. Sinclair makes an appearance and Fred's friend Jonas shows up and hits off a friendship with Betsy. There just wasn't any meat to the story. I came away disappointed.
The third story was about Lara Windham, packleader of the Windham werewolves. MJD tried to bring the three stories together at this point by having Lara call Betsy and Fred for help, but it didn't really work. I kindof liked the parts where they were describing their new ipads that fold out as opposed to the old "clunkers" that didn't even fold. Other than that, there weren't really any redeeming qualities.
All in all I thought this collection was a flop. I won't read the Fred series or the werewolf series by MJ Davidson and I am seriously considering cutting my losses and giving up on Betsy.

HASH(0x94a3fb28) su 5 stelle Too chaotic 9 marzo 2013
Di C Thilmany - Pubblicato su

The book contains 3 novellas. Overall, I’m glad I got this through the library and didn’t spend any money on it. All three of the stories are humorous.

Super, Girl is unrelated to any series the author has written before and the best word I can think to describe it is chaotic. Hailey is the head of an HR department, but regularly has to write herself up for not being there. Why? Because she’s out being the hero, “It Girl.” She meets with a new hire and both of them stumble over their thoughts and words as they’re both attracted to the other. At no time in this story do we see any act of heroism although we hear about it. We do see what she’s like afterward, and that’s rather unique. Due to the circumstance described, I could see this becoming a series. 2 stars

Undead and Underwater brings Vampire Queen Betsy and Fred the Mermaid together when a human working for the New England Aquarium has called for help and they have to save the Underfolk. The two had never met, might never actually like each other, but learn to respect the other. A great deal of time is spent chatting; too much. Sinclair is there, as is Fred’s best friend, Jonah. But I did enjoy seeing the two series come together even though at times it was difficult to follow just who was saying what. They do confront the bad guys and other than the different characters meeting, this was probably the best part of the story. 3 stars

Incomer deals with Lara’s first day as the Wyndham leader of the Pack after her father decides to retire. Now we knew she knows Betsy, but I hadn’t been aware the Wyndhams knew Fred as well. Much of the story keeps jumping into the past so we understand what’s going on today – and there is a threat. And we get to know Lara’s younger brother Sean and Derik’s son, Jack. I enjoyed this story the most as it felt less chaotic than the other 2 and the last chapter is something I’ll remember for a while. 3.5 stars
