Unwillingly drawn out of her annual drunken stupor, Captain Nancy Martin, Retired, finds herself involuntarily reactivated. Her assignment—help Special Agent Erica Hampton solve the disappearance of an entire school's student body. Hampton's superiors suspect a slaver ring has kidnapped the children, to sell them on a rim world beyond the Terran Federation's borders.

When Nancy and Erica discover the truth behind the abductions, they realize their deadline is quite literal, and much closer than they thought. When the gloves come off, the missing children couldn't have anyone better fighting for their lives.

It will take every bit of skill Nancy and Erica have to track down the villains behind the disappearances. Defeating them will be a different matter entirely.

Growing up, Henry worked at the usual range of menial jobs -- from grocery store bag boy to pizza delivery to retail sales -- before ending up in software development. In between the menial jobs and the IT jobs, he achieved some small fame as the writer and co-creator of the small press comic book titles Southern Knights and X-Thieves. For the past ten years, Henry has also taken up the mantle of professional storyteller, performing regularly throughout the state of North Carolina. He has also released his first book of children's stories, which contains three stories he regularly tells during his performances. Henry has been a fan of science fiction for as long as he can remember. He has loved of space opera and planetary romance since the beginning, which is why his science fiction novels end up in those subgenres. Henry currently live in Raleigh, NC, with his wife, son, a cat, and lots of imaginary friends all clamoring to tell him of their adventures. Follow Henry's latest writing at

3.0 su 5 stelle not Vogel's usual style, attempt at a girl book, but ending redeems 13 febbraio 2017

The second half was pretty good and the ending was satisfying. But the first half not so much and the first 20% nearly persuaded me to stop. Be prepared for that if you tackle this one. Here are some of the reasons for my feeling about this book. From Vogel, a male author of swashbuckling tales, you do not expect a girl-talk girl-bonding book. Maybe he has done a good job of it, I wouldn't know, but it reads a little like many female-authored books I've read. The girls keep their silly banter going while getting shot at, and think first about hugging the victims before all the bad guys are dead.

Their whole scheme does not seem plausible, either, which could be because Vogel usually writes about worlds so different we can't tell what is plausible, but this universe is familiar. The underlying evil scheme worse than kidnapping for slavery is something that supposedly goes on in the world today, at least to some extent, but the extent of it here is just gross. And a lady is in charge of it. There are a couple of twists in her character. We have the two ladies bonded because both have lost loves in the war, against the one who is responsible for thousands of people losing loved ones. There is a lot of dwelling on Nancy's loss of Sko from the first book. In fact, the resolution at the end revolves around this. It was pretty well done at the end. Getting flushed out of airlocks, on purpose or otherwise, is a recurring theme (that's what happened to Sko). Nancy keeps hearing disturbing voices in the wormholes. Other people hear them too, and she uses this to torture and extract information (BTW, Vogel forgot to wrap up what happened to that guy). At the end, she hears Sko.

But ... it was too depressing to read a whole novel dwelling on this, which is a large part of what was wrong with the terrible first 20%. Once in action, though implausible, it's more interesting. Vogel does action well. And the evil Miss Perkins is, well, she almost convinces Nancy there is no way to hold her to account, but there is a darkness and resourcefulness in Nancy she does not know about.

I always enjoy these easy to read action tales written by Henry Vogel. This story moved right along with plenty of wit, intrigue, and action. I enjoyed meeting a new character in Erica who partnered well with Captain Martin. I look forward to seeing more of Nancy Martin and her new adventures with GenCo.

I read this as an ERC

Captain Nancy Martin has issues. Retired after her daring actions on the Ark Two in The Counterfeit Captain, she fell into the same trap that claimed many people like her in the past.
Depression. Drinking.
Memories of people who died; of people who wouldn't stay dead. Memories which haunted her every waking and dreaming existence.

But Captain Nancy gets a reprieve.

Asked to aid in another daring rescue, she manages to come to grips with her past, and the memories that continue to haunt her, and rescue more innocent lives.
And in the end, she rescues herself. Because heroes can only do one job. But it's one no one else can do.

The Undercover Captain is a fine read, either with the previous story or alone; there are enough telltales to cover the past.
